Ottawa takes down Toronto in shootout

Associated Press

The Ottawa Senators just need some extra time to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Dany Heatley scored the lone goal of the shootout to give Ottawa a 6-5 victory over Toronto on Monday night, the Senators’ second shootout win over the Maple Leafs this season.

Dominik Hasek stopped Kyle Wellwood, Eric Lindros and Jason Allison in the shootout and Ottawa (3-0-0) remained unbeaten.

Hasek stopped Lindros and Allison when the teams went to a shootout in the season-opener last Wednesday. That night, Daniel Alfredsson and Heatley beat Ed Belfour as the Senators won the shootout 2-0 and the game 3-2.

Ottawa had a 4-2 lead in the third period Monday, then had to force the overtime.

“To go up two goals in the third period doesn’t mean you’re going to win the game. Two years ago maybe, but not with the new rules,” Hasek said.

Canucks 4, Red Wings 3: In Detroit, Anson Carter scored with 8:46 remaining to break the final tie as Vancouver held off Detroit.

Avalanche 7, Flames 3: In Denver, Marek Svatos had a hat trick and rookie Wojtek Wolski, Colorado’s first-round draft pick in 2004, scored his first NHL goal in the first period as Colorado beat Calgary.

Oilers 4, Mighty Ducks 2: In Anaheim, Calif., Radek Dvorak’s power-play goal, Edmonton’s third of the game, with 11:40 to play broke the game’s final tie and lifted the Oilers to a win over Anaheim.

Capitals 3, Rangers 2: In Washington, rookie Alex Ovechkin scored the game-winning goal on a power play in the third period, and goaltender Olie Kolzig made 30 saves as Washington fended off New York.

Panthers 3, Islanders 1: In Uniondale, N.Y., Roberto Luongo made 29 saves, including a penalty-shot stop in the third period, and earned his first non-shutout win of the season as Florida beat New York.

Sabres 3, Penguins 2 (OT): In Buffalo, N.Y., Jochen Hecht jammed in a loose puck from in close with 20 seconds left in overtime to give Buffalo the win over Pittsburgh.

Bruins 4, Lightning 2: In Tampa, Fla., Brian Leetch scored his first goal for Boston and P.J. Axelsson had a goal and an assist as the Bruins beat Tampa Bay.
