Alliance gets $100,000 grant

The Kootenai Alliance for Children & Families has been awarded a $100,000 Drug-Free Communities matching grant from the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

The money will be used to expand prevention work within the community, according to Callie Ketner, executive director for the alliance. The grant is renewable for up to four years.

To qualify, the alliance had to have a long-term plan for reducing substance abuse and participate in a national evaluation of the Drug-Free Communities Program, created by Congress in 1997.

Panhandle district plans several flu shot clinics

The Panhandle Health District has scheduled two flu shot clinics at Kootenai County senior centers to serve high-risk individuals on Thursday, the health district announced Friday.

Rathdrum Senior Center will have a clinic from 9 to 11 a.m., and Spirit Lake Senior Center will have its clinic from 1 to 3 p.m. Shots are $20 and covered by Medicare Part B or Medicaid.

A clinic for children ages 6 to 18 months is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 22 at the health district headquarters, 2195 Ironwood Court. Flu Mist also is available for children ages 5 to 18.

A clinic for the general public will be Nov. 4 at the Community United Methodist Church, 1470 W. Hanley Ave., Coeur d’Alene. Another is scheduled Nov. 7 at Real Life Ministries, 1866 N. Cecil Road, Post Falls. Both clinics are from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sandpoint events will honor Forest Service

Sandpoint In celebration of the U.S. Forest Service’s 100th anniversary, the Sandpoint Ranger District and Bonner County Heritage Museum are hosting a photography exhibit, a museum reception and a two-hour documentary film.

The reception and film are scheduled for Friday.

The traveling photo exhibit by K.D. Swan will be on display at the museum through November. Swan’s photography spans his career with the Forest Service from 1911 to 1947, and features black and white images from the backcountry of Idaho, Montana and the Dakotas.

The reception is scheduled for 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the museum, 611 S. Ella, and will be followed by, “The Greatest Good: A Forest Service Centennial Film” at 7 p.m. at the Panida Theater. The film tells the story of American public lands and examines the conflict between the camps in the land management debate.

The reception is free. Tickets to the documentary are $5 and available at the Sandpoint Ranger District, F.S. Weskil’s coffee shop, Monarch Mountain Coffee and Eve’s Leaves. Proceeds benefit the museum.

Candidate questions sought for CdA debate

The city of Coeur d’Alene is asking residents to participate in an Oct. 26 candidate debate by submitting questions to be asked during the live broadcast on the city’s cable Channel 19.

Mayor Sandi Bloem faces challenger Joseph Kunka in the Nov. 8 election. Councilman Ben Wolfinger opted not to run for re-election, and local businessman Mike Kennedy, city planning commission member Mary Souza and former city employee Dan Yake are vying for his seat.

Former planning commissioner Susie Snedaker is challenging Councilwoman Deanna Goodlander, and Steven Foxx is vying for Councilman Woody McEvers’ seat.

Ironman Coeur d’Alene to be broadcast Sunday

This year’s Ironman Coeur d’Alene will air at 3 p.m. Sunday on the Outdoor Life Network.

The channel is showing five of the 2005 Ironman North America qualifying events this fall.

Coeur d’Alene’s race will air at 3 p.m. Ironman Lake Placid will air Oct. 23, and Ironman Wisconsin will show Oct. 30. Ironman Florida is scheduled to run Dec. 18. Ironman Arizona aired Oct. 9.
