Colfax police think man was hit by car

Compiled from staff reports The Spokesman-Review

Colfax police are looking for information after they found an elderly man critically injured on a city sidewalk, apparently hit by a vehicle.

Officers found the man at 6:30 a.m. Friday, and he was taken to Whitman County Community Hospital and then to Deaconess Medical Center where he underwent surgery, said Officer Robert Wride. He was listed as stable and placed on a ventilator late Friday. The man lives at an assisted living facility, police said. His identity was not released Friday.

His injuries suggest he was hit by a vehicle sometime between 5:30 and 6 a.m., and the driver may not have realized the accident occurred, Wride said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Colfax Police Department at (509) 397-4616, the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office at (509) 397-6266, or the Washington State Patrol in Colfax at (509) 397-3600.

Mom, 14, pleads guilty to custodial interference

A 14-year-old Deer Park girl pleaded guilty this week to second-degree custodial interference for fleeing from authorities last month with her medically fragile, month-old daughter.

Jessica M. Poindexter was the object of a widely publicized two-day manhunt that ended Sept. 15 when Poindexter and her infant were found at a home in the 12100 block of East Cataldo Avenue in Spokane Valley.

The baby, who had a medical condition that required her to have special food, and Poindexter had been placed in the custody of a foster parent when Poindexter fled. Poindexter was facing a court hearing that could have taken the infant from her.

In a Spokane County Juvenile Court hearing this week, Poindexter was sentenced to the 26 days of custody she had already served.

She was ordered to have no contact with her daughter or their former foster parent outside the presence of a Child Protective Services worker. Poindexter also was given a curfew and ordered to submit to random drug tests.

Jury convicts man in May 17 home burglary

A prolific Spokane criminal was convicted this week of residential burglary, second-degree theft and second-degree malicious mischief – and he faces two more trials next month.

A jury convicted Cephas William Parham, 29, Thursday as charged in a May 17 burglary of a home in the 12100 block of East Mansfield in Spokane Valley. Parham was carrying a baseball bat when a woman who lives there confronted him and co-defendant Victor Lee Oles, 30, outside her broken front door.

Sheriff’s deputies, who had been alerted that a burglary was in progress, chased down Parham and used a dog to track and apprehend Oles.

Deputy Prosecutor Bob Sargent said Parham is to be sentenced Nov. 14, the same day he is to go on trial for alleged first-degree theft and second-degree burglary in connection with a March 9 break-in at the Zip’s at 1604 W. Francis.

Parham also faces trial Nov. 28 on eight counts stemming from an alleged crime spree in July in which stolen vehicles were smashed into a church and an office supply store so the buildings could be burglarized. He also is accused of crashing a stolen car into a barn while trying to elude a pursuing deputy.

Charges against Parham in his Nov. 28 trial include attempting to elude police, two counts of second-degree burglary, three counts of first-degree possession of stolen property, second-degree possession of stolen property and first-degree malicious mischief.

Before his trial this week, Parham’s convictions included vehicular homicide escape, second-degree burglary, second-degree theft, first-degree possession of stolen property, two counts of attempting to elude police, second-degree theft, two counts of car theft, drunken driving and reckless driving.
