Previous Kootenai Canvas: Old barn

The Spokesman-Review

Joanne Stebbins of Coeur d’Alene wrote the winning essay that correctly identified the last Kootenai Canvas photo, which was a picture of horses grazing in a pasture by an old barn on Mokins Bay Campground Road on the East side of Hayden Lake.

My husband and I took a Sunday drive today, meandering up through Hayden Lake and some of the back roads so we could find just the right photo ops to use for our blogging hobby. After all, it is fall and the colors are here.

We were looking for that backwoods look and feel and finally meandered into the Mokins Bay campground. The campground was closed, however we kept driving up the road where we thought it might lead us to that one special picture! Even though a sign was posted that said “no outlet,” we could always turn around, right? The dirt road beckoned us.

We discovered a beautiful old fence where the backwoods photo was a given and the cows stood still! Then we kept driving up a piece so we could turn around. It was obvious at this point we were heading into a private residence. This is where I exclaimed, “Oh, honey, look at that barn!”

We also captured some photos of some wild turkeys along the way and admired the many beautiful homes that landscape Hayden Lake. Eventually we were back on Highway 95 as we remarked about how we were finally returning to civilization. No backwoods on this stretch of pavement!

We entered our home and as my husband settled back to upload our pictures, I sat back to read the paper and opened the Handle Extra to the page sporting that barn!

“Honey, look! It’s that barn!” He said, “Yep.” Who would have guessed that I would open the page right to it! I didn’t even need the shot! Gad, now I am scared to turn the page!
