The Spokesman-Review

Nominations are coming in. Listed below are some of the names readers have submitted for recognition as outstanding citizen contributors in the Inland Northwest during 2005. On Jan. 1, The Spokesman-Review editorial board will announce, in an editorial, the person deemed to exemplify the civic engagement qualities that make a community strong.

You can endorse these candidates or suggest others by sending e-mail to citizencall@spokesman.com or postal mail to Citizen Call, in care of The Spokesman-Review, 999 W. Riverside Ave., Spokane, WA 99201.

Here are some names recommended already and some of the comments from those making the recommendations:

“Shannon Sullivan, leader of the petition drive that led to a Dec. 6 vote on whether Jim West should be recalled as mayor of Spokane:

“Thousands of residents of Spokane could have started the recall process. We didn’t. She did. …

“Who else in Spokane has done something that will individually reach every registered voter in the city?”

“Diana Wilhite, mayor of Spokane Valley:

“Diana has been totally involved with the City Council and the people of Spokane Valley. If she feels the need, she will telephone private citizens to communicate.”

“Peggy Doering, Valley Fest coordinator:

“Her ideas, creativity, production and commitment helped Valleyites beam with pride and sigh with nostalgia as the celebration began with the Hearts of Gold night parade.”

“Jayne Singleton, director of the Spokane Valley Heritage Museum:

“She has worked hard with sponsors to renovate the museum building and then has been very busy procuring items for the museum. … This talented and artistic lady is familiar with hammers, nails and a measuring tape as the museum grows.”
