Gonzaga, LMU battle to 0-0 tie

The Gonzaga Bulldogs fought to a scoreless tie with the Loyola Marymount Lions in West Coast Conference women’s soccer action in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Gonzaga goalkeeper Ashley Haugen tallied five saves to notch the shutout. LMU (4-7-4, 0-2-1) keeper Joslyn Slovek stopped six shots on goal, including back-to-back shots by GU’s Christin Leverson and Nanda McCormick in the 57th minutes.

Gonzaga (10-3-2, 1-1-1) outshot the Lions 18-13.

•Miranda Montejo’s breakaway goal with 16 seconds remaining in the second overtime gave the Nevada Wolf Pack a 1-0 victory over the Idaho Vandals in Western Athletic Conference action in Moscow, Idaho.

Idaho, which lost its 11th straight match, falls to 2-13 overall and 0-4 in WAC play. Nevada is 8-5-1, 2-1.

Idaho has been shut ut in five straight matches.

•Susan Butler found the net just 1:38 into the match and the Willamette Bearcats (9-4-1, 7-2-1) made it stand up in a 1-0 Northwest Conference victory over the host Whitworth Pirates (5-5-3, 4-4-2).

Keeper Jenn Miller had two saves for the Pirates, who outshot the Bearcats 11-6.

•Brittany Cooper scored twice in a 10-minute span of the second half to propel the Arizona State Sun Devils (8-5-2, 3-1) to a 3-0 Pacific-10 Conference victory over the Washington Huskies (0-12-3, 0-4) in Seattle.

Men’s soccer

The Whitworth Pirates (11-1-1, 8-0-1) pummeled the Willamette Bearcats (3-10, 1-8) 6-0 to cap a record-setting weekend.

The six goals Sunday, coupled with a seven-goal outburst against George Fox on Saturday gave the Pirates a team-record 13 goals in consecutive matches against Northwest Conference opponents. The previous record was 10 goals.

Ali Seyedali and Niko Varlamos each scored a pair of goals for Whitworth. Evan Hendrickson and Jordan Lister also found the net for the Pirates.

•Jeff Hoover scored in the 55th minute to lift the Washington Huskies (8-3-1, 2-2-1) to a 1-0 Pacific-10 Conference victory over the 13th-ranked California Golden Bears (9-3-1, 2-3) in Berkeley, Calif.

Hockey

Lieg Sherman scored a pair of goals to help the Spokane Braves defeat the Grand Forks Border Bruins 4-1 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play at Planet Ice.

Evan Witt and Josh Pickens also scored to guide Spokane (5-4-1-1) to its fourth straight victory.

Golf

Washington Huskies senior Paige Mackenzie helped the U.S. team to a tie for second place in combined scoring at The Spirit International Amateur Championships at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.

The competition included a combined men’s and women’s scoring system that saw the U.S. tie with South Africa at 6-under 541. England won the overall title with a score of 13-under 533.

Mackenzie teamed with Arkansas’ Amanda McCurdy for a four-round total of 14-under-par and a fourth-place finish in the women’s competition.
