Ferris tops Rogers for slowpitch title

It was a case of the third time being a charm for Ferris in the District 81 slowpitch softball championship.

After losing to Rogers twice during the regular season, the Saxons’ offense picked an opportune time to come alive, defeating the host Pirates 9-7 on Wednesday.

Lauren Viau got the Ferris offense rolling early with a two-run double in the third inning. Kiona Zbylski added to the Saxons’ lead in the seventh with a solo home run.

Ashley Clark and Jen Knight both finished 3 for 3 for Rogers, the regular-season champion.

Central Valley pulled off the biggest upset of the night with a 1-0 home win over second-place Gonzaga Prep in the Greater Spokane League. Two seniors led the Bears (8-6, 8-4) to victory on Senior Night. Molly Nordstrom received a pass from Megan Wells and scored with a kick from just inside the 6-yard box. Mallory Flesher stymied the Bullpups (12-2, 10-2), making eight saves for the shutout. … Elsewhere, Jaimey Etten’s goal at the 77th minute proved to be the difference in Mead’s 2-1 win over host Ferris. Kirsten Bafus put Ferris (10-3, 10-2) on the board 4 minutes in, but Chelsea Mykines tied the game 4 minutes later with an unassisted goal for the Panthers (11-3, 9-3). … Averi Hallman assisted on Mt. Spokane’s lone goal in regulation and then gave the Wildcats (8-5, 7-5) the 2-1 win over host Lewis and Clark with a score 2 minutes into overtime at Hart Field. Leah Pomante scored 7 minutes into the game, giving Mt. Spokane the early lead. The Tigers (5-10, 4-8) tied the game on a goal from Katie DittmanCrystal Igbinoba netted a pair of goals and teammate Kim Whitfield had a goal and an assist in Cheney’s 7-0 win over visiting Rogers. The Blackhawks (7-8, 4-8) outshot the Pirates (0-13, 0-12) 20-2. … Katija Margitich and Kristi Wirtz both had one goal and one assist to lead host Shadle Park over West Valley (6-9, 3-9) 6-1. The Highlanders (10-4, 8-4) have won more games this season than the last three seasons combined. … University stayed on top of the standings with a 2-1 win at East Valley. The Titans (14-0, 12-0) received goals from Rachel Lopez and Tonya Schnibbe, while Miranda Brother scored for the Knights (8-6, 7-5). … Katie Emoto one-timed a corner kick from Courtney Ramsey for the lone score in North Central’s (3-11, 2-10) 1-0 win at Clarkston (0-15, 0-12).
