Mendez bolsters state-bound Badgers

Jesus Mendez scored twice as Bonners Ferry’s boys soccer team recovered from an early deficit to beat St. Maries 4-1 in the District I championship match and earn a berth in the State 3A playoffs.

After St. Maries (7-11-1) had gone up 1-0 in the 12th minute, Mendez, off the first of Josh Wilkerson’s two assists, scored in the 17th minute to tie it for the Badgers (13-2-1). Wilkerson then added a goal just before halftime before Mendez and Adam Hall added second-half goals to ensure the win.

•Jeffrey Strong scored in the fourth minute of overtime as Timberline beat Coeur d’Alene 2-1 in a loser-out match in Lewiston to earn a berth in the State 5A playoffs. Garrett Lowell scored in the 33rd minute for CdA (8-6-5), which saw its season end.

•Emmett shut out Post Falls 2-0 in Lewiston to earn a berth in the State 4A playoffs. The Trojans finished 9-8 on the season.

Girls soccer

Katie Adams scored twice and Sarah Krabacher made four saves as reigning champion Sandpoint earned a berth in the State 4A playoffs by beating Skyview 3-0 in a loser-out match in Grangeville. Tiffany Windju also scored for the Bulldogs (12-5-4), and Tori Smith and Brittany Oakley added assists.

•Amanda Ratcliffe and Elsa Krier scored as St. Maries (6-12-1) earned a berth in the State 3A playoffs by beating Bonners Ferry (6-7-1) 2-1 in the District I championship match. Jennifer Putnam scored for the Badgers.

•Eagle earned a berth in the State 5A playoffs by shutting out Coeur d’Alene 5-0 in a loser-out match in Grangeville. The Vikings finished 13-5-1 for the year.
