A detached garage and a car inside were destroyed after a fire in east Spokane on Sunday, but firefighters managed to keep the blaze from nearby homes.
“The guys did an excellent job of fighting the fire,” said Battalion Chief Dan Brown of Spokane Fire.
Small flames continued to shoot from acetylene tanks inside the garage an hour after the fire started at about 3:30 p.m.
Above the garage, a large tree and several power lines were blackened from the flames that 26 firefighters helped extinguish. The cause was unknown late Sunday.
During the fire, one firefighter was burned on the hand and shoulder, Brown said
The garage is located near the 1400 block of East Pacific Avenue. Its owner could not immediately be identified, Brown said.
“I was so scared,” said Brenda Stamps, who saw the fire burning next to her mother’s house from her kitchen window.
She and other neighbors said the garage’s owner runs a cab company and fixes cars in the garage.
Taxis from three companies were parked around the area.
