Cheney upsets EV, wins district soccer title

Ceri Palk scored Cheney’s third shootout goal to clinch a 1-0 victory over East Valley in Tuesday’s District 8 3A girls soccer championship at Spokane Falls Community College.

Amy Knox had 10 saves in regulation and overtime for the Blackhawks, who outscored the Knights 3-1 in the shootout after 90 minutes of scoreless play. Tiera Como had three saves for EV, which defeated Cheney 4-0 during the regular season.

Cheney (8-9) will face West Valley-Yakima, the Mid-Valley League’s No. 2 seed, in Saturday’s regional semifinal. EV (8-8) will visit MVL champion Selah.

In the third-place match, Nicole Hamlin‘s goal in the 44th minute led West Valley to a 2-1 victory over North Central. Lindsay Hood also scored for the Eagles (7-10), who will face MVL No. 4 Prosser on Saturday in a loser-out match. The Indians (3-13) are done.

Laura Gibson threaded a pass through two defenders, and Jaclynn Watson converted the game-winning goal in the 65th minute to give Deer Park a 2-1 victory over visiting Medical Lake in Great Northern League play. The victory gave the Stags (8-7, 6-5) a tiebreaker advantage over the Cardinals (8-7, 6-5) for third place in the GNL by virtue of a head-to-head sweep. Both teams play Colville this week. … Kim Fisher scored two goals and assisted on Riverside’s first score of the game in a 6-0 rout of host Chewelah. Randi Mead added a goal and assist for the Rams (9-5, 8-3), who locked up second place with the victory. The Cougars (1-14, 0-12) are done for the season. … Mariah Beeler scored in the 66th minute to give Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) a 1-0 victory over host Colville. Laura Beadle had 11 saves for the Eagles (7-9, 6-6), who are a half-game behind Deer Park and Medical Lake for third place. Abby Lentz also had 11 saves for the Indians (4-9, 2-8).

Volleyball

Caitlin McGrane had 11 kills and 11 digs to lead Colville to a 3-1 victory over visiting Deer Park (0-11) in GNL play. Jordan Emmil added 39 assists and five aces for the Indians (7-4). … Ashley Cox dished out 27 assists and Katie Hinrichs added 22 digs as Pullman (10-1) swept Lakeside at Nine Mile Falls. Kelli Tikker had nine kills, two aces and 15 digs to lead the Eagles (8-3). … Kayla Newberg led Riverside with 18 kills, three aces and seven blocks in a sweep of visiting Medical Lake (1-9). Kateari Jensen served 15 straight points in the second game for the Rams (5-5).

•Mallory Mielke had 28 assists and Mariah Mielke added 10 digs as top-seeded Davenport defeated eighth-seeded Liberty 25-9, 25-12, 25-14 in a Bi-County tournament first-round match at Reardan. Cami Bullock had six kills for Liberty (6-20). … Noelle Carstens had 10 kills and Brook Ferderer served six aces to lead No. 4 Reardan over No. 5 Wilbur-Creston 3-2. Kaitlyn Reidt had 22 kills and 20 digs for the Wildcats (10-10). The Indians (14-4) will face Davenport (17-4) in a semifinal match. … Ann-Marie Hunt had 25 assists and was perfect on 32 service points as No. 3 Lind-Ritzville defeated No. 6 Wilbur-Creston 3-1. Jenna Kragt led the Broncos (14-8) with 10 kills and six blocks, while Hannah Winters had 13 blocks for the Crusaders (7-12). … Stacie Shields had 14 kills and five blocks to lead No. 2 Sprague-Harrington to a 3-0 sweep of No. 7 Odessa. Natalie Deking added 32 assists for the Falcons (18-2), who will face Lind-Ritzville on Thursday.
