Eastern falls to Pacific in four

Ashley Groothuis had 24 kills, 13 digs and two blocks to lead the University of the Pacific (12-9) to a 27-30, 35-33, 30-25, 30-28 victory over Eastern Washington in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday night at Stockton, Calif.

Lizzy Mellor (Colfax High) led the Eagles (16-7) with 20 kills, 11 digs and four blocks. Ashley Jensen added nine kills and eight blocks.

Football

Whitworth freshman kicker/defensive back Jordan Marshall (Mt. Spokane) earned Northwest Conference special teams player of the week honors, averaging 39 yards per punt and hitting five extra points in Saturday’s win over Menlo (Calif.).

Men’s soccer

Whitworth junior forward Niko Varlamos earned NWC offensive player of the week honors, posting a hat trick in Sunday’s win against Pacific University.

Women’s soccer

Gonzaga goalkeeper Ashley Haugen was named West Coast Conference co-player of the week. Haugen logged two shutouts, including Sunday’s scoreless tie with No. 5 Santa Clara.
