First-place Warriors defeat CCS in five

Community Colleges of Spokane lost a 3-2 volleyball match to visiting Walla Walla Community College in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges play on Wednesday night at Spokane Falls CC.

After dropping the first two games 30-23, 30-21, the Sasquatch (22-9, 8-3) rallied to tie the match with wins of 30-21, 30-20. But the decisive game went to the first-place Warriors (24-4, 10-0) 15-11.

Brittney Kubik and Michelle Ongers of CCS contributed 18 kills apiece. Josey Luft added 28 digs, and Amy Small and Sara Shelton combined for 56 assists.

•Whitworth has been selected as one of eight regional hosts for the opening rounds of the NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament.

Whitworth will host the regional from Nov. 10-12. This is the second time Whitworth has been selected to host a volleyball regional.

The Pirates are 16-3 overall and on top of the Northwest Conference with an 11-1 record. Whitworth is ranked No. 19 in the latest CSTV/AVCA Division III Coaches Poll.

Tournament participants will be announced Nov. 6. The tournament field will consist of 62 teams, with seven eight-team regionals and one six-team regional. The winners of the eight regionals will meet in the national quarterfinals on Nov. 19.

Prep girls soccer

Deer Park used three unanswered goals in the second half to pull out a 4-2 win over visiting Colville in a Greater Northern League match.

The teams were knotted at 1 after the first half, but the Stags (9-7, 7-5) received goals from Melissa Menzia, Jaclynn Watson, and Laura Gibson to take the lead.

Deer Park, the No. 3 seed in the GNL, will host No. 6-seeded Colville (1-14, 0-12) on Tuesday in the first round of the District 7 2A playoffs.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Braves rallied from a 5-1 deficit and notched their seventh consecutive win with a 6-5 overtime decision over the host Castlegar Rebels in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play.
