Alabama roughs up Utah State

Associated Press

Brodie Croyle threw three touchdown passes and DJ Hall set an Alabama receiving record to keep the fifth-ranked Crimson Tide undefeated with a 35-3 win over Utah State (2-5) on Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The Crimson Tide improved to 8-0 for the first time since 1994 and finished its non-conference season with an easy win that allowed the starters to rest in the fourth quarter after two straight dramatic, last-minute Southeastern Conference wins.

Alabama grabbed control barely five minutes into the game as Croyle threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Ezekial Knight on the first possession and followed with a 1-yard scoring pass to Le’Ron McClain the next time the Tide had the ball.

Wendell Mathis ran for 229 and three touchdowns, including a 78-yarder late in the fourth quarter, to lead the Bulldogs (6-1, 4-0) past the Warriors (3-5, 3-3) in Honolulu.

The victory was the first at Aloha Stadium for Fresno State since 1994.

Boise State 49, Nevada 14

Sophomore safety Marty Tadman made two interceptions and a clutch fourth-down stop as the Broncos (6-2, 3-1) used their defense to stifle the Wolf Pack (4-3, 3-1) in Boise.

The victory extended Division I-A’s longest current home winning streak to 29 games and marked the 30th straight league win for the Broncos.

Mark Dillard rushed for 93 yards and scored twice for Tech, which took the lead for good on Dillard’s 15-yard run, which made the score 21-14 in the third quarter.

Adam Trafalis passed for 161 yards and a touchdown for San Jose State.
