‘Mariners’ win World Series

The Spokesman-Review

Though the Mariners finished last in their division two years in a row, we can all take pride that three of Seattle’s former players helped the Red Sox and Chisox win it all.

In the 2004 series, I doubt if Boston would have won had they not had Jason Varitek, Derek Lowe, David Ortiz and Mike Timlin. Four ex-Mariners who were squandered away. How do other teams find value in players that the last-place Mariners do not?

And now in the 2005 series, we see Freddy Garcia, Scott Podsednik and Chris Widger, all formerly with the Mariners organization. Podsednik was even waived to Milwaukee before Seattle fans had time to figure out how to pronounce his name!

Of course, management can throw a spin on why these players are not with the organization any longer. Seattle’s GMs are the under-performers, not the players. Recognizing winning talent has not been their forte.

As a brain teaser, should the San Francisco Giants play in the World Series next year with their current roster, can you name five players who were once with the Mariners?
