East Valley vs. CdA highlights football openers

The 2005 Inland Northwest high school football season really gets going tonight with more than 20 games on the schedule, highlighted by four contests pitting Greater Spokane League schools with teams from Idaho’s Inland Empire League.

Topping the schedule is a battle of two league contenders, the GSL’s East Valley (9-4 last season and a Washington 3A quarterfinalist) and the IEL’s Coeur d’Alene (9-3 and Idaho 5A state runner-ups) in CdA. The Vikings won 34-14 last year at EV.

GSL favorite Mead (5-5) travels to Post Falls (8-2) in Trojans coach Jeff Hinz’s first game. The other two GSL/IEL matchups are Central Valley (3-7) at Sandpoint (8-2, including a 28-0 win over CV), and Clarkston (5-6) at Lewiston (3-6).

Rogers (1-9) plays host to Ingraham of Seattle at Albi, while Shadle Park (6-4) travels to Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls (5-4), a member of the 2A Great Northern League.

Both North Central (4-6), in the debut of new coach Grady Emmerson, and Cheney (4-6) trek across the state tonight. NC faces Ellensburg and the Blackhawks take on Leavenworth’s Cascade. Two GSL foes, Mt. Spokane (5-5) and West Valley (0-10), meet at WV in a non-league game tonight.

Monday, Gonzaga Prep (12-2) and Ferris (7-3) will open at Qwest Field in the Old Spice Emerald City Kickoff Classic. The Saxons meet defending State 4A champ Evergreen (Vancouver) at noon, and G-Prep faces Tacoma’s Bellarmine Prep at 3.

Today’s complete schedule is in the Stat Sheet.
