The University of Idaho volleyball team opened the Baden Cougar Challenge Tournament in Pullman on Friday night with a 30-26, 30-20, 31-29 sweep of Buffalo.

Meghan Brown had a double-double for the Vandals (5-2) with 14 kills and 11 digs, while Amanda Bowman added 10 kills. Nikki Morzenti led the Bulls (4-2) with 15 kills.

Also, host Washington State defeated Oral Roberts 27-30, 30-25, 30-27, 30-27. Jen Barcus (Lakeside High-Nine Mile Falls) and Kelly Rosin each had 11 kills for the Cougars (3-2), while Natalia Owens added 10 kills and 11 digs.

Idaho and WSU will square off in the tourney’s final match tonight at 7:30.

•North Idaho swept Treasure Valley 30-19, 30-18, 30-16 at the Inland Northwest Communications Tournament at Spokane Falls Community College.

NIC outhit Treasure Valley .364 to -.053 for the match, led by Collese Doman’s nine kills. She also led the Cardinals with 22 assists.

Host Community Colleges of Spokane went 2-1 and is 9-1 for the season.

•Montana snapped Gonzaga’s five-match winning streak with a 30-28, 27-30, 30-23, 30-25 victory at the Ruby’s Invitational in Missoula.

Claudia Houle led the host Grizzlies (6-2) with 22 kills, while freshman Michelle Boevers led the Bulldogs (5-3) with 15.

•Undefeated Florida Atlantic (8-0) defeated Eastern Washington 30-23, 30-22, 18-30, 30-28 on the opening day of the Best Western Invitational in Tampa, Fla.

Ashley Jensen hit .421 for the Eagles (5-3) with 10 kills and a team-high four blocks, while Lizzy Mellor hit .414 with 14 kills.

The Eagles will close out their nine-day, eight-match Florida trip today against Appalachian State and tourney host South Florida.

•Second-ranked Washington improved to 5-0 with a 30-14, 30-24, 30-11 sweep of host North Dakota State at the Doublewood Inn Classic in Fargo.

The Huskies outhit the Bison (0-8) .489 to .129, led by Christal Morrison’s 13 kills and four aces.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga remained undefeated with a 3-1 victory over Kentucky (2-1) on the first day of the OSU Stephen Hensor/Joe Zaher Classic in Corvallis, Ore.

The Bulldogs (2-0-1) took a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by George Josten and Scott Campbell, then iced the victory in the 87th minute, when Josten passed to Bryan Mullaney on a 2-on-1 breakaway.

Gonzaga goalkeeper Vito Higgins had three saves and carried a shutout into the final minute, but Riley O’Neill scored for Kentucky at 89:48.

GU will play Iona today at noon, followed by host Oregon State against UK at 2:30 p.m.

•Bryan Bourland (Mead) scored on a headed pass from Keith Kirsch (Mt. Spokane) off a corner kick in the 84th minute to lead CC Spokane to a 1-1 tie against Clark in a non-conference match at SFCC.

Joey Muravez struck first from 30 yards out in the 25th minute to keep the Penguins (1-0-2) undefeated. Hawk Mummey had four saves for the Sasquatch (1-2-2).

Women’s soccer

Sonja Baumgartner’s first career goal led Idaho to a 2-1 non-conference victory over Northern Colorado (2-1-1) in Moscow.

Baumgartner scored on a header from Aly South in the 74th minute for the Vandals (2-2), who managed just two shots in the first half.

•Washington State fell to eighth-ranked Wake Forest 2-1 in a physical, non-conference affair in Pullman.

The teams combined for 40 fouls and three cards. A collision between Wake Forest goalkeeper Kaitlyn Doe and WSU’s Alix Rustrum early in the second half knocked Doe out of the match.

The Cougars (3-2) couldn’t take advantage, however, managing only Anna Miller’s first career goal in the 27th minute to even the match. Sarah Kozey put away the match in the 69th for the Demon Deacons (4-0-1).

•Lisa Kosena scored two of Cal State Fullerton’s three second-half goals as the Titans defeated Gonzaga 3-2 in the opening match of the Santa Clara (Calif.) adidas Classic.

Jamie Blanche put the Bulldogs (2-1-1) ahead in the 39th minute, and Nanda McCormick scored her second goal of the season in the 88th.

•Ashley Imes (Mt. Spokane) recorded a hat trick in the first half as CC Spokane defeated Clark 5-0 in a non-conference match at SFCC.
