U-Hi, WV, CV volleyball teams even their records

University’s volleyball team evened its record, and West Valley won an early Greater Spokane League high school showdown.

The Titans, Eagles and Central Valley are all 1-1 as the first week of league competition came to an end.

U-Hi won an important road match at Ferris 25-16, 25-9, 25-17 behind the setting, blocking and serving of Kara Crisp, with plenty of help from new faces. Transfer Ashlee Lupfer led the team with 12 kills, junior Ashlee Valkenaar and sophomores Kasey Jurich and Laura Leach all were among statistical leaders.

The Titans had lost to Gonzaga Prep in their opener.

West Valley defeated Cheney in a match between 3A foes 25-19, 25-12, 25-11, Mel Dossey leading the team in kills and also pounding home 10 service aces.

Central Valley, which had beaten Clarkston to begin the season, ran into league favorite Mead on Thursday, losing 25-16, 25-10, 25-19.

East Valley, which opened against 4A playoff favorites Lewis and Clark and Gonzaga Prep, dropped both matches, although giving the Bullpups all they could handle.

Scores were 25-19, 27-25 and 25-22, Rachel Bonertz and Trisha Hiebert with seven kills each, sharing team kills lead for the second straight match.

Valley soccer debuts

Three Valley girls soccer teams opened the Greater Spokane League with wins.

Central Valley cruised to a 7-1 victory over West Valley. University won a hard-earned 3-2 triumph over Shadle Park and East Valley blanked Rogers 5-0.

Bears Jenny McKinsey, Justine Bowman and Molly Nordstrom did most of the damage against the Eagles. They accounted for six goals, two apiece, and four assists, Nordstrom with a pair.

U-Hi broke a 1-1 halftime deadlock on goals by Tonya Schnibbe and Rachel Lopez within the first five minutes of the second period.

Knights junior forward Lindsey Moles scored one goal and had three assists against Rogers. All five goals came in the match’s first 34 minutes.

Central Valley lost 3-0 in a nonleague match Thursday against Lake City of Coeur d’Alene. Wednesday, the Bears host playoff perennial Mead when GSL competition resumes.

Tough go for CV gridders

It was tough sledding for Central Valley in their Greater Spokane League football opener.

The turnover-plagued Bears (1-1 overall) fell behind 14-0 after a quarter and trailed at one point in the first half 21-0 before losing 35-10 to Mead Thursday afternoon in an early league showdown.

CV fumbled four times losing three and was intercepted twice while gaining just 199 yards of offense.

Mead amassed 465 yards of total offense, almost evenly divided between run and pass and limited CV to 72 yards on the ground.

Grover wins Liberty Cup

Liberty Lake Women’s 18-Hole Golf Club member Jill Grover was the September winner of the Liberty Cup.

She had a net 70 during the Cup and putting competition.

Fewest putts winners were Grover and Jackie Shea with 29 in A flight. Raouleen Grimes and Jean Hatcher were best of the day with 28 in B.

Coleen Wisenor and Flurry Snyder took 30 in C and Myrna Neubauer nipped Idell Jenicek by one with 31 in D.

Jacobs tops at Trailhead

Joyce Jacobs was first lady during weekly medal competition among Trailhead Ladies Golf Club members.

Jacobs shot low gross 45 in A flight where Carolyn State and Deanna Hauser tied with net 36.

There was a three-way tie for low gross in B flight, Emma Long, Wilma Capaul and Bev Johnson all shooting 57. Sandi Hatcher netted 33.

Grace Libby in C flight and no-handicap golfer Mary Ann Evans each shot 64.

Jacobs and Dee Elder had chip-ins.

Cash wins Captains Cup

Hangman Valley Ladies Day golfer Gloria Cash was the monthly winner of Captain’s Cup.

She had a net 67 during the September competition.
