Barcus leads WSU volleyball to victory at GU

Kelly Rosin and Jen Barcus each had 18 kills as Washington State University defeated Gonzaga 30-27, 27-30, 30-24, 30-26 in a non-conference volleyball match at Martin Centre.

The Cougars (5-3) had 14 blocks in the match, led by Natalia Owens with seven. Owens also had 15 kills and 11 digs. Becky Jones had a double-double for GU (6-4).

•The Community Colleges of Spokane rebounded from a 2-0 deficit, but the Sasquatch (9-4, 1-1) couldn’t complete the comeback in a five-game loss to Yakima Valley (9-1, 2-0) in a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges East match at Spokane Falls Community College. CCS has lost four straight matches.

Golf

Gonzaga’s Mary Kate Morgan shot a tournament-best 71 to finish tied for 14th at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, Colo.

Gonzaga, with a three-day team score of 951, finished 17th in the 18-team field.

Men’s soccer

Guillermo Calvillo scored a hat trick to lead Treasure Valley (1-3) to a 4-2 win over CC Spokane (2-3-2, 2-1-1) in an NWAACC East Division match at Spokane Falls CC.

•Whitworth junior forward Niko Varlamos was named Northwest Conference offensive player of the week after scoring in both Pirates matches last weekend.

Women’s soccer

Katlyn Laughlin scored both CCS (4-1-2, 2-0-2) goals in a 2-all tie with Treasure Valley (1-2-1, 1-2-1) in a NWAACC East match at SFCC.

Laughlin tied the match in the 89th minute on a feed from Elizabeth Phillips.

Hockey

The Spokane Chiefs reassigned 17-year-old forward Ryan Pajimola to the South Surrey Eagles of the BCHL. The Spokane resident appeared in four exhibition games.

The move leaves the Chiefs with 26 players on the roster, with six of those at National Hockey League training camps. That leaves the team with 20 players who will practice this week in preparation for the Chiefs exhibition finale Friday versus Tri-City at Eagles Ice-A-Rena at 7 p.m.
