Vandals struggle; SCU gets sweep

The University of Idaho volleyball team was no match for No. 17 Santa Clara, who swept the Vandals 30-21, 30-19, 30-21 at the Hampton Inn Utah Classic in Salt Lake City.

The Vandals (7-4) had 35 kills and 32 errors in the match, hitting just .028, while the Broncos (7-0) hit .289.

Kati Tikker (Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls High) led the Idaho offense with 12 kills, while Saxony Brown led the defense with nine digs.

•Despite outblocking Middle Tennessee State 19-3 1/2 , Washington State fell to the Blue Raiders 30-28, 30-28, 30-26 at the Billikens Classic in St. Louis.

Natalia Owens and Jen Barcus (Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls) each had 10 kills for the Cougars (5-4), who also received eight blocks each from Barcus and Brittany Johnson.

Ashley Adams led MTSU (12-1) with 15 kills.

•Baylor used its size to hit .323 and defeat Gonzaga 30-19, 28-30, 30-23, 30-19 in the Fiesta Bowl Tournament in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Nicole LeBlanc had 19 kills and 18 digs for the Bears (8-2), who had four players with double-digit kills.

Briawna Mueller led the Zags (6-6) with 15 kills, and Becky Jones had her fifth straight double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs.

•Whitworth (5-2) defeated George Fox 16-30, 30-16, 26-30, 31-29, 15-8 in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams in Newberg, Ore.

Natalie Danielson (Community Colleges of Spokane) led the Pirates with 26 kills, while Whitney Murphy (Mead) and Holly Coleman (Mt. Spokane) each had 19 digs.

•North Idaho swept the Inland Empire All-Stars 30-16, 30-25 in the North Idaho College Tournament at Sports USA in Spokane Valley.

Konae Purcell led the Cardinals with 10 kills and Lacey Anderson (Mead) added 14 assists. NIC hit .323 for the match.

The Community Colleges of Spokane went 1-3 on the first day of the tournament, defeating Salt Lake in three games before losing to Northeastern in three games and being swept by Southern Idaho and Barton County.

Men’s soccer

Keith Kirsch (Mt. Spokane) scored twice, including the game-winner in the 70th minute, as the Community Colleges of Spokane defeated Pierce 3-1 in a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges match at Tacoma.

Kevin Bourland (Mead) had two assists for the Sasquatch (3-3-2, 3-1-1 NWAACC East), setting up Bryan Bourland (Mead) for the final goal in the 72nd minute.

Women’s soccer

Freshman Megan Hyte scored her fourth game-winning goal of the season in the first minute of the second half, leading Washington State to a 1-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth at the OSU Nike Invitational in Corvallis, Ore.

All four of Hyte’s goals have been game-winners, resulting in all four wins for the Cougars (4-2).

Goalkeeper Katie Hultin had four saves for her second solo shutout of the season, and Washington State outshot VCU (1-2-3) 11-8.

•Beth Drollinger, Lacey Castleberry and Heather Horn each scored their first goals of the season to lead Gonzaga over Montana 3-1 at Martin Field.

The Zags (3-2-1) outshot the Grizzlies 20-5 on their way to their fourth straight home victory, dating back to the end of last season.

Montana (1-5-1) scored on an own goal in the 43rd minute, 88 seconds after Castleberry nailed the game-winner.

•UC Riverside scored twice on 11 shots in the second half in a 2-0 win over Eastern Washington in Cheney.

Renee Scachetti assisted on the first goal for the Highlanders (4-1-1) in the 51st minute, then scored the second in the 71st.

Tiera Como had seven saves for the Eagles (1-6), who were outshot 20-9.

•South division leader Clackamas improved to 4-0 in NWAACC play with a 3-1 win over CC Spokane in Oregon City, Ore.

Akosua Fordjour scored for the Sasquatch (4-2-2, 2-1-2 NWAACC East) on an assist from Alexis DeLeo (Gonzaga Prep) in the 68th minute.

Amy Danielson had 11 saves for CCS.

Hockey

Damon Hollandsworth scored twice and Ryan Skier had 40 saves as the Spokane Braves skated to a 4-4 tie against Nelson in KIJHL play at Planet Ice.
