American League

Royals 5-4, Tigers 4-2: At Kansas City, Mo., Zack Greinke pitched seven strong innings as the Royals defeated Detroit to sweep a doubleheader. Mike Sweeney’s RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth gave the Royals a victory in the opener.

Yankees 12, Orioles 9: At New York, Gary Sheffield hit a grand slam and drove in six runs and the Yankees earned a victory over Baltimore.

Red Sox 15, Devil Rays 2: At St. Petersburg, Fla., David Ortiz hit his league-leading 45th and 46th homers and drove in four runs to help Curt Schilling and Boston hang on to first place in the East with a victory over Tampa Bay.

White Sox 7, Indians 6 (10): At Chicago, Joe Crede hit two home runs, including a game-winning shot leading off the 10th, and the White Sox increased their lead in the Central to 3 1/2 games with a victory over Cleveland.

Angels 2, Rangers 1: At Anaheim, Calif., Bartolo Colon won his league-leading 20th game, becoming the first Angels pitcher to reach that mark since Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan in 1974, and Los Angeles defeated Texas.

Athletics 8, Twins 3: At Oakland, Calif., Joe Blanton won his third straight start, Jason Kendall drove in three runs to match his season high and the Athletics beat Minnesota.

National League

Giants 4, Nationals 3: At Washington, Barry Bonds turned jeers to cheers with an upper-deck homer in his 2005 road debut, then drew a walk before Moises Alou’s go-ahead, three-run shot in the ninth of San Francisco’s victory over the Nationals.

Reds 6, Cardinals 5: At Cincinnati, Rich Aurilia drove in three runs with a homer and a single, and Javier Valentin singled home the tiebreaking run in the seventh, rallying the Reds to a victory over St. Louis.

Brewers 5, Cubs 3: At Milwaukee, Geoff Jenkins homered in the first and Doug Davis worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh to help the Brewers to a victory over Chicago.

Astros 7, Pirates 4: At Pittsburgh, Andy Pettitte won his seventh start in a row and kept Houston in the wild-card lead with a victory over the Pirates.

Braves 4, Phillies 1: At Atlanta, Jorge Sosa overcame a career-high six walks to pitch 6 2/3 shutout innings and push the Braves closer to their 14th straight division title with a victory over Philadelphia.

Mets 3, Marlins 2 (12): At New York, Mike Jacobs delivered a two-out single in the 12th, driving in David Wright with the winning run as the Mets defeated Florida, denting the Marlins’ wild-card hopes.

Rockies 20, Padres 1: At Denver, the Padres allowed seven runs in the first in their most lopsided loss of the season. Matt Holliday hit two homers for Colorado. His eight RBIs were a career high, the most in the league this season, and it tied the franchise record, as did Colorado’s 20 runs.

Diamondbacks 4, Dodgers 1: At Phoenix, Javier Vazquez allowed four hits through 7 2/3 innings and Arizona beat Los Angeles.
