Those Victorians had a dish for everything. A plate full of celery just wouldn’t do.

When the mother of the woman who would become Wallace Libby’s stepmother married in 1890, one of her wedding gifts was a beautiful “celery dish.”

In a beautiful marriage of form and function, the etched-glass vase, with its original silver-plated basket, held tall stalks of celery, their leafy ends standing upright, on the table.

More than 50 years ago, the dish was given to Libby, who lives in Spokane Valley, with his wife Grace.

She has cared for it since, keeping it on display in her china cabinet. The unique piece is now Grace Libby’s favorite possession.

“I’ve never seen another one like it,” she said. “I treasure it.”
