Eagles lose Big Sky opener to Wildcats

Lizzy Mellor had 18 kills, one of four Eagles in double figures, but it wasn’t enough as Eastern Washington fell to Weber State 30-28, 30-22, 26-30, 26-30, 15-7 in the Big Sky Conference volleyball opener for each team Thursday in Ogden, Utah.

Brittney Page and Ashley Jensen each had 15 kills and Kerri Beck 10 for Eastern (7-4, 0-1).

Leah Burmeister had 15 kills for the Wildcats (6-7, 1-0).

•Five Vandals had double-figure kills, led by Amanda Bowman’s 23, but Idaho (7-5, 0-1) still fell to San Jose State (6-6, 1-0) 30-27, 30-26, 27-30, 27-30, 15-13 in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams in San Jose, Calif.

•Collese Dornan registered 10 kills and 13 assists as North Idaho swept the College of Eastern Utah 30-15, 30-22, 30-22 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference opener for both teams in Coeur d’Alene.

Baseball

The Community Colleges of Spokane program had seven sophomores selected to participate in the Sophomore Showcase at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash., on Saturday.

Representing the Eastern Region are Travis Bertholf of Rogers, Jordan Moore of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls), Alex Scarpelli of Shadle Park, Dan Lau of Lake City in Coeur d’Alene, Luke Farden of Shorewood in Shoreline, Wash., Shawn Gizynski of Woodinville and Michael Campo of Durango High in Las Vegas.
