Greenacres Christian Church to celebrate anniversary

Greenacres Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will host several events next weekend to celebrate the congregation’s 100th anniversary.

Members first began gathering for Sunday school classes in a home near Flora and Baldwin in 1902. The church was founded in 1905 with 15 members. The group purchased the land at 18010 E. Mission Ave. in 1906 and built its first sanctuary. Church members still gather for worship on that same parcel of land, though the building has been added on to and remodeled several times.

Next Saturday at 4 p.m. there will be a celebration featuring music, children’s activities and hot dogs. On Oct. 2, there will be a special worship service at 11 a.m. followed by an ice cream social and antique show.

Music and more

Zion Lutheran Church will host a performance by the POP Players during the 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. worship services Sunday. The intergenerational group and musicians and actors will present “Once Upon a Parable.”

The church, 8304 E. Buckeye Ave., will also host a parking lot sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon next Saturday. Proceeds will be used to send the church youth to summer camp.
