Zags selected for Hall of Fame Challenge

Arizona will face Illinois and Gonzaga will play Texas in the Basketball Hall of Fame’s inaugural Hall of Fame Challenge doubleheader Dec. 2 in Phoenix, officials said Monday.

Arizona and Illinois were eliminated in the second round of this year’s NCAA tournament. Texas was upset in a regional final and Gonzaga lost in a regional semifinal to UCLA, which lost in the national championship game.

Redick wins Naismith

Duke’s J.J. Redick won the Naismith Trophy for men’s college basketball player of the year, and Villanova’s Jay Wright was named the nation’s top coach, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Sunday in Indianapolis.

The Naismith Trophy is given annually to the men’s and women’s college players of the year. Other men’s finalists were Rudy Gay, Connecticut; Adam Morrison, Gonzaga; and Allan Ray, Villanova.

The women’s winners will be announced Friday in Atlanta.

Saturday, Morrison was named the CBS Chevrolet Player of the Year and Wright was named coach of the year. Chevrolet donated a $5,000 scholarship to Gonzaga in Morrison’s name.
