1. “I usually say the Our Father, and that’s my old faithful prayer. … Sometimes I pray when I really feel like I need God to help me with something, and sometimes we just have conversations. We just kick it. God is my homeboy. Jesus is my homeboy.”

2. “Most of my fans know that I come from a Christian background and that I am a Christian now.”

3. “Any religion that is so black-and-white – to me, that’s like fanaticism. Religion is not black-and-white. It’s much more complicated. Spirituality is much bigger than that. God is much bigger than that. I don’t believe in a wrathful God. I believe he’s much more forgiving and inclusive than some religions.”

4. “I love my Church, and I’m a Catholic who was raised by intellectuals, who were very devout. I was raised to believe that you could question the Church and still be a Catholic. What is worthy of satire is the misuse of religion for destructive or political gains. That’s totally different from the Word, the blood, the body and the Christ. His kingdom is not of this earth.”

5. “I don’t believe there’s a clash of civilizations. I believe there’s a clash of the uncivilized. We need a wave of people to come along and bridge the gaps, because we have so much in common, so much to learn from each other. We need to silence the extremists. Let’s hope the moderates will take the microphone and be louder.”

6. “I have to keep reminding myself: If you give your life to God, he doesn’t promise you happiness and that everything will go well. But he does promise you peace. You can have peace and joy, even in bad circumstances.”

7. “God is my hero” was said by this celebrity who was raised by a Pentecostal preacher and is currently a member of a Church of God in Christ congregation in Los Angeles.

8. “Certainly I’m a Christian first and foremost. But I do believe in religious tolerance and finding the commonality between all of us. I think that’s how we’re all going to come together.”

9. “One of the main precepts of Kabbalah is that we’re put on this Earth to help people. And your job is to figure out how you can help, and what it is that you can do.”

10. At one time, he was a Catholic, a Mormon and member of the Nazarene Church. After marrying, he joined the Greek Orthodox Church, though he keeps his faith private.

11. “I want to hear the Torah reading because that’s the energy of the week. It cleans the palate for the coming week and gives you a spiritual grounding and explanation for the things that have happened.”

12. “I’m a Buddhist, I’m a Muslim, I’m a Christian. I’m whatever you want me to be.”

13. “We go into religion in order to feel warmer in our hearts, more connected to others, more connected to something greater and to have a sense of peace. I think all religions try to do that, but they corrupt themselves. I like Buddhist thought because it breaks that down; it teaches you how to view your thoughts rather than be your thoughts.”

14. As a child, he sat through Sunday school class, bored and eager to get out. Only at the worship service, with its big pipe organ, did he connect with the church: “It stuck with me. Those old songs are definitely part of what I am spiritually and musically.”

15. “Scientology gives us tools of communication and understanding and humanity so we can live more peacefully and happily with each other.”
