Martinez begins rehab in Florida

New York Mets ace Pedro Martinez is on his way to the club’s minor league complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Manager Willie Randolph said Martinez will begin workouts geared toward getting him throwing off a mound again. Martinez hasn’t been able to do that since Aug. 14, when he allowed six runs in one inning at Philadelphia because of a strained right calf.

Martinez said that the plan is for him to spend one week in Florida. How soon will he be back?

“It depends on how I react,” he said.
