Bach Festival continues Friday, Sunday

The 28th Northwest Bach Festival continues this weekend with concerts Friday night at the Davenport Hotel and Sunday afternoon at Mary Queen Catholic Church in northeast Spokane.

The concerts will feature Bach’s music, but not exclusively.

“I wanted to go into some music that showed not only the great range of Bach’s own music, but music that fed into his great genius,” says Gunther Schuller, the festival’s artistic director.

Composers range from Antonio de Cabazon in 17th-century Spain to Johnann Sebastian Bach and his son Carl Philipp Emanuel in the 18th century.

Friday’s concert features Boston Symphony harpsichordist Mark Kroll, Seattle’s Margriet Tindemans on viola da gamba and Spokane Symphony principal cellist John Marshall.

For Sunday’s performance, Tindemans and Kroll will be joined by Spokane soprano Darnelle Preston. Preston has performed with such ensembles as Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society and the Robert Shaw Chorale and has directed several of the choirs within the Spokane Area Children’s Chorus since 1994.

The festival concludes on Feb. 11 with a recital by Boston organist James David Christie, a frequent Bach Festival performer, at St. Augustine Church on the South Hill.
