Mountaineers outlast Notre Dame

Kevin Pittsnogle scored 22 points and West Virginia remained unbeaten in the rough-and-tumble Big East with a 71-70 win over Notre Dame Wednesday in Morgantown, W.Va.

West Virginia (16-4, 7-0) clung to a 71-65 lead in the final minute. Notre Dame scored the next five points and Chris Quinn, who led the Irish (10-9, 1-7) with 24 points, had a chance to win the game, but missed a jumper with less than 2 seconds left.

(2) Duke 83, (15) Boston College 81: At Boston, J.J. Redick scored 28 points as the Blue Devils (20-1, 8-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) nearly blew an 18-point lead before beating the Eagles (16-5, 4-4).

(3) Memphis 84, Tulsa 61: At Tulsa, Okla., Darius Washington Jr. scored 22 points to help the Tigers (20-2, 6-0 Conference USA) beat the Golden Hurricane (7-12, 2-4).

(7) Texas 66, Missouri 53: At Columbia, Mo., P.J. Tucker scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half and had 11 rebounds as the Longhorns (18-3, 6-1 Big 12) beat the Tigers (10-9, 3-5).

(13) Tennessee 69, Vanderbilt 62: At Knoxville, Tenn., Major Wingate scored 16 points as the Volunteers (15-3, 6-1 Southeastern Conference) beat the Commodores (12-6, 3-4).

(18) N.C. State 66, Virginia 64: At Raleigh, N.C., Cameron Bennerman followed his miss with the go-ahead basket with 74 seconds left as the Wolfpack (17-4, 6-2 ACC) beat the Cavaliers (10-8, 4-4).

(19) Oklahoma 71, Texas A&M 63: At Norman, Okla., Michael Neal scored 16 points as the Sooners (14-4, 5-2 Big 12) beat the Aggies (13-6, 3-5) for their fifth straight win.

(21) Michigan 71, Penn State 65: At State College, Pa., Dion Harris scored 23 points as the Wolverines (16-3, 6-2 Big Ten) beat the Nittany Lions (10-9, 2-6).

(22) Indiana 72, Northwestern 63: At Bloomington, Ind., Roderick Wilmont had a career-high 23 points in his first start this year as the Hoosiers (13-5, 5-3) won their 34th straight at home over the Wildcats (10-9, 3-5).

(23) Iowa 77, Purdue 68: At West Lafayette, Ind., Jeff Horner scored a career-high 32 points and set an Iowa record for career 3-pointers as the Hawkeyes (17-5, 6-2 Big Ten) rallied from an 11-point deficit to beat the Boilermakers (7-13, 1-8).

(24) LSU 84, Auburn 69: At Baton Rouge, La., Darrel Mitchell scored 27 points and LSU (15-5, 7-0 SEC) beat Auburn (9-9, 1-6) in a battle of Tigers.

Women

Cappie Pondexter scored 24 points as No. 6 Rutgers (16-3, 8-0 Big East) squandered a 27-point lead before beating No. 25 St. John’s (17-4, 7-3) 61-51 in Piscataway, N.J.

(6) Maryland 88, Miami 77: At College Park, Md., Shay Doron scored 26 points as the Terrapins (20-2, 7-1 ACC) beat the Hurricanes (14-7, 4-4).
