South Hill library gets new equipment

The Friends of the Library, a nonprofit volunteer organization that raises money for the libraries, is making a $30,000 donation for a new self-checkout machine and a new digital microform reader/scanner for the South Hill Library branch, 3324 S. Perry St.

The new self-checkout machine will be available for customers to use at noon on Tuesday, after a short unveiling ceremony.

“This is tremendous. The donation of these two pieces of equipment will be felt by customers for many years to come. We are so grateful for the support the Friends provide to the library through the book sales and through donations for programs and equipment; they are a wonderful group of people,” said library director Pat Partovi.

South Hill branch manager Louise Sullivan agrees. “The customers at South Hill will definitely be very happy to have another check-out option.”

The Friends of the Library holds two large used-book sales annually and they sell books in their minibookstore in the lobby of the Downtown Library to raise money for city libraries. The bookstore, Buy the Book, is open from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and is staffed by volunteers.

Web site raps Wal-Mart

In response to the proposed Wal-Mart store at 44th and Regal, opponents have launched a Web site, www.nosouthillwalmart.com.

According to Web site developer Patrick Ream, the site generated more than 500 visits and a growing self-registration e-mail list within the first two days of its launch.

The site compiles local news about the project, information on how to get involved and the project’s potential impacts, as well as contact information and tips for submitting public comments to city officials.

For more information, contact Ream by e-mail at par@nosouthhillwalmart.com or 448-9185.
