Cellist, pianist performing Sunday concert at St. John’s

Cellist Kevin Hekmatpanah and pianist Rita Vasilyeva-Huber will perform a program of classical compositions on Sunday at 4 p.m. at St. John’s Cathedral, 127 E. 12th Ave.

Featured will be works by Bach, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Debussy, Chopin and Piatigorsky.

Hekmatpanah, associate professor of music at Gonzaga University since 1994, has performed throughout the United States and Europe.

Vasilyeva-Huber, who began her piano studies at age 6 in her native Russia, moved to the United States in 2001 and lives in Post Falls.

Admission to the concert is free; donations will be accepted. Visitors can tour the cathedral before the concert from noon to 4 p.m.

CdA Youth Orchestra

The Coeur d’Alene Youth Orchestra will offer a multimedia interpretation of Aaron Copland’s score to the 1940 film “Our Town” in a free concert Monday at 7 p.m. in North Idaho College’s Schuler Auditorium.

Local musician and historian Robert Singletary will accompany the performance with a narration he wrote themed to Coeur d’Alene. Community artist Chelsea Cordova will complete a mural onstage and student dancers will perform.

The program also includes the premiere of the piece “Changing Winds” by NIC student Stephen Merrill of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and a performance of Haydn’s Cello Concerto by ninth-grade cellist Katie Baker.
