High school students earn all-state orchestra, band, choir honors

STUDENT MUSICIANS FROM ACROSS THE STATE send in audition tapes and await news whether they have been selected to the Washington Music Educators Association All-State Orchestra, Band or Choir.

If selected, the students get to join other outstanding young musicians to perform in Yakima in mid-February.

Several Spokane Valley high school students recently got the news of All-State recognition.

East Valley High School has 11 student musicians who received All-State honors:

Symphony Orchestra – Clara Dexter, harp; Jessica Mercer, string bass; Emily Squezello, cello; Nick Studebaker, violin 2.

Choir – Evelyn Barbour, alto 2; Erika Boles, alto 2; Jeff Olfs, bass 1; Spencer Peugh, tenor 2; Ryan Stroh, tenor 2; Courtney Van Winkle, soprano 1.

Band – Shawna MacDonald, bass clarinet.

West Valley High School has four students who were selected: Cassandra Krum, symphonic choir; Laura Larson, treble choir; Zach Slovarp, baritone horn; and Gavin Mitchell, trumpet.

University High School has two students going to the All-State Symphonic Choir. They are freshman Melissa Call, for first alto, and Brian Monson, for second tenor.

From Central Valley High School, sophomore Brandon Campbell will be going to Yakima and playing bass clarinet in the All-State Concert Band.

Cheerleading clinic next Saturday

Children in kindergarten through eighth grade can learn cheerleading at a clinic to be held at East Valley High School next Saturday.

The EVHS Junior Cheer Clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for kids to learn cheers and dance moves. The $20 cost includes a T-shirt and pompom. The children who participate will get to perform at the Jan. 17 basketball game.

To guarantee a child’s shirt will be ready for the performance, people should register or call by Friday. Checks are payable to East Valley Booster Club. For more information, contact Amy Tellinghusen at 241-5125.

Childfind appointments available

Each year, the Central Valley School District’s Special Services Department conducts a Childfind for children with developmental delays in need of possible diagnostic assessment and recommended for appropriate services.

The purpose of Childfind is to identify preschool children residing within the Central Valley School District with developmental delays.

Childfind is a free screening program sponsored by the district. Screening clinics are held throughout the year. The areas screened are speech, language, cognitive and physical development. The screening clinics are held on a monthly basis during the school year. For an appointment or more information, please call 228-5860.

Students earn Girl Scout awards

Central Valley High School freshman Mallory Hendrickson and East Valley High School freshman Jessica Yelley have earned their Girl Scout Silver Award.

The two girls are members of Girl Scout Troop No. 52 under the direction of Rozanne Caruso and Tana Moorhead. The focus of their Silver Award project was team-building activities at day camp.

EVSD staff awards announced

The East Valley School District announced December staff awards of appreciation.

Staff is awarded for inspiring positive attitudes, productive and dependable performances, creation and maintenance of safe and caring schools, and for dedication and commitment.

Those recognized included Jan Beauchamp, with administration; Faye Atwood, Mountain View Middle School; Ken Janson, Skyview Elementary; Janet Brown, Trentwood Elementary, Deb Hudson, transportation; and Cindy Irvin, Trentwood Elementary.
