The Spokesman-Review

Pepperdine freshman Jessica Ross blocked a layup with 3 seconds left and Katy Ridenour missed a desperation jumper as Gonzaga rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to force overtime, but fell 59-58 to Pepperdine in West Coast Conference action Thursday night in Malibu, Calif.

The loss snapped Gonzaga’s 19-game WCC winning streak. The Bulldogs’ last conference loss had been a 59-53 home loss to San Francisco Feb. 15, 2004.

The Bulldogs, who were playing without senior Anne Bailey because of illness, trailed 27-14 at the half, but used a 47-32 rebounding edge to chip away at the lead before finally tying the game at 42 with 8:11 left to play.

Ashley Anderson, who finished with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for her third straight double-double, hit a pair of clutch free throws with 7 seconds left that tied the game at 55 and forced the overtime period.

Neither team could do much in the overtime, with Gonzaga’s Katie Prichard hitting the only field goal for either team.

Stephanie Hawk had 12 points for the Bulldogs (7-11, 2-1). Jasmane Clarendon had a game-high 13 points for the Waves (5-11, 2-1).

•Eshaya Murphy had game highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds as Southern Cal defeated Washington State 81-60 in Pac-10 play in Pullman.

The Trojans broke the game open behind a 16-2 run that gave USC a 32-17 lead with 4:41 left to play in the first half. The Trojans led by double digits the rest of the way.

Murphy went 7 of 15 from the floor, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, while Jamie Hagiya added 16 points, and Chloe Kerr chipped in with 14 points and seven rebounds for the Trojans (11-5, 5-2).

•Cameo Hicks had 13 of her game-high 17 points in the second half as Washington held off UCLA 96-75 in Pac-10 action in Seattle.

Hicks scored six points during an important 14-5 run to open the second half for UW (12-3, 5-1), which is off to its best start since going 12-2 in 2002-03.

Husky senior Kayla Burt, a senior guard with a history of heart problems, left the game early in the first half and was taken to a nearby hospital as a precautionary measure when her defibrillator activated.

“She’s aware, alert, responsive,” Washington’s executive associate athletic director Jeff Compher told the Associated Press after calling the UW Medical Center. “She’s glad we won. I could hear her in the background cheering.”

Compher said Burt was being put through a series of tests and was under observation. It was unclear whether she would be admitted to the hospital.

Nikki Blue led UCLA (9-7, 4-3) with 24 points.
