Chewelah hits from foul line, defeats Stags

Jochelle Schatz led five players in double figures with 18 points as Chewelah hit 20 of its 21 free throws to top host Deer Park 68-50 in a Great Northern League girls basketball matchup Tuesday.

Jenny Polm (12 points), Bryn Smith (11), Brooke Schazenbach (10) and Amanda Whitley (10) helped the Cougars (7-4, 1-2) overcome a two-point deficit with 2 minutes left in the third quarter. Laura Gibson and Rachel McNeil led the Stags (7-4, 1-2) with 13 points apiece.

In other GNL action, three players scored more than 15 points as Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) routed host Colville 73-28. Kellie Cummings paced the Eagles (9-4, 5-0) with 18 points. Jordan Emmil notched 10 points to lead the Indians (0-12, 0-5). … Free-throw shooting turned out to be the difference as Medical Lake converted 14 more points from the foul line than host Riverside in a 58-42 victory. Richelle Daily led the Cardinals (8-3, 2-2) with 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Kayte Holm had 13 for the Rams (5-6, 1-3).

•Newport’s Maria Barranco scored 26 points and dished out 10 assists in a 66-57 win over Kettle Falls in a Northeast A League game at Newport. Alicia Smith added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies (4-9, 1-1). Liz Beardslee scored 31 points for the Bulldogs (4-10, 0-2).

Titi Ala had 19 points and 14 rebounds for St. George’s (10-3, 6-2) in a 54-39 home win over Cusick (9-5, 5-3) in a Panorama League game. The Dragons (10-3, 6-2) trailed 20-9 after the first quarter but outscored the Panthers (9-5, 5-3) 45-19 in the last three quarters. . … Chelsi Pakootas scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Inchelium (10-2, 8-1) to a 61-33 win over visiting Republic. Sarah Knapton topped Republic (6-7, 3-6) with 12 points.

Christy Dashiell scored nine of her 11 points in the fourth quarter, but Columbia’s rally fell short in a 54-45 non-league loss to visiting Springdale (7-6) at Hunters. Holly Howard scored 20 points for the Chargers. Jaysana Kemmerer paced the Lions (2-10) with 19 points. … Freeman used a 14-2 third quarter to capture a 47-34 win over Tekoa-Oakesdale at Oakesdale. The Scotties (11-2) received 14 points from Jessie DePell and Jennesa Miller. Jessica DeGon had 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range for the Nighthawks (9-5). … Jordan Harazin scored 16 points for Colfax (12-3) in a 75-61 win over host St. John-Endicott. Sydney Gossard led all players with 22 points for the Eagles (11-4).

Boys basketball

Jason Paul scored 15 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as Riverside (7-4, 1-2) edged Medical Lake 53-46 in a GNL game at Riverside. Andrew Richardson had 16 points for the Cardinals (4-7, 1-2). … In other GNL action, Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) shot 77 percent from the free-throw line to 56 for Colville (1-11, 0-5) in a 48-36 win at Colville. Travis Corigliano and Joel Nolan scored 12 points apiece for the Eagles (8-5, 4-1). … Andrew Smith had 13 points and Cameron Stroyan added 11 to lead Chewelah (5-7, 3-1) to a 55-32 win over host Deer Park. Jason Azzarito scored 21 points as Kettle Falls cruised past Newport 80-49 in an NEA game. Brandon Holibaugh scored 15 points for the Bulldogs (13-2, 2-0). David McFall paced the Grizzlies (2-11, 0-2) with 16 points.

Jeffery Livingston scored 13 points as St. George’s (8-5, 5-5) topped Cusick 71-46 in a Panorama League game at St. George’s. Brandon Scott led all scorers with 19 points for the Panthers (6-8, 3-5).

Josiah Tampien hit the front end of a one-and-one to push Tekoa-Oakesdale’s lead to two points in the final seconds of a 36-34 non-league win over Freeman at Oakesdale. Kelly Cook led the Nighthawks (10-4) with 14 points, and Michael Wittwer scored seven for the Scotties (7-6). … In other non-league action, visiting Springdale (4-8) held Columbia to 13 second-half points in a 60-33 win at Hunters. Jeff Vanderholm scored 18 points for the Chargers. Wrestling

Pullman recorded five straight six-point victories – two pins and three forfeits – en route to a 49-20 win over visiting Chewelah in a Great Northern League dual. The Greyhounds totaled four pins, including Matt David at 140 pounds, during the match. Kyle Druffel defeated Devon Benedict, who placed third in state last year, 8-4 at 171 pounds. … In other GNL action, Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) notched five pins and got major decisions in the final three matches in a 42-27 win over host Medical Lake.
