G-Prep turns away Shadle’s upset bid

The Spokesman-Review

Shadle Park would just not go away. But a 3-point basket attempt with 3 seconds remaining didn’t fall and host Gonzaga Prep avoided a Greater Spokane League girls basketball upset.

The Bullpups (10-2, 4-1) defeated the Highlanders (7-5, 2-3) 55-52 in a game that was as close as the final score.

After trailing by as many as seven points midway through the first half, Shadle picked away and led 40-38 through three quarters.

But the Bullpups regained the upper hand in the final quarter and clung to the two-point lead they got with 33 seconds remaining.

Tara Cronin scored 23 points, 13 in the second half, had four assists and eight rebounds for G-Prep. Teammate Corrina O’Brien scored nine second-quarter points and also had four assists.

Shadle jumped to a 5-2 lead at the game’s outset, but trailed 14-7 following Prep’s eight-point spurt midway through the first half.

Thereafter, the Highlanders rallied on the free-throw shooting of Lexi Bishop and Lexie Petterson and trailed by just three points at intermission. The pair combined for nine free-throw points.

Bishop finished the game with 23 points and Petterson added 21. Between them they were 14 for 19 from the line.

Mead 53, Central Valley 49

The host Panthers (8-4, 3-2) used superior rebounding and full-court pressure to rally against the Bears (7-5, 3-2). Mead had a 30-16 rebounding advantage, including 14 offensive rebounds that produced second-chance points.

Pressure produced 21 turnovers, helping them come back from a 25-22 halftime deficit. Four Panthers scored in double figures.

Mt. Spokane 55, Rogers 40

The host Wildcats (7-5, 4-1) reversed an earlier loss to remain tied for third with G-Prep. Sam Patrick scored 23 points and had 10 rebounds for Mt. Spokane, while Lacey Kerr led with 11 rebounds and Tiara Pittman scored 13. The Pirates (2-10, 0-5) were paced by D’Erica Jones with 16 points and Rikeya Crossley with 13 points.

Ferris 51, West Valley 34

The visiting Saxons (5-7, 2-3) were outrebounded 48-34, but rode a strong defensive first half and fourth-quarter offensive finish to a win over the Eagles (2-10, 1-4). Jenna Galloway (13 points) and Lexi Lallas (10 points) topped the Saxons. Krystal McCarthy and Leah Hanenberg each scored 11 for WV.

LC 81, East Valley 32

Cheney 52, North Central 41

Defense on NC scoring leader Ashlee Michelson carried the Blackhawks (5-7, 1-4) to a victory at home. Michelson was limited to four points. Alie Hansen and Lindsay Giampietri, who combined for 25, weren’t enough for the Indians (3-9, 1-4). Kyle Miller and Calynne Oyoloker combined for 24 to pace Cheney.
