Salt Lake tops NIC in SWAC

Viktor Dubovitskiy scored 12 points Friday to lead a balanced team effort as Salt Lake defeated North Idaho 70-65 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference men’s basketball matchup in Salt Lake City.

Paul Wayne added 10 for the Bruins (14-3, 5-2), who also had three players score nine points apiece, and Brody VanBrocklin had seven points and eight assists.

Frank Clair scored 19 points, hitting 9 of 11 free throws, and pulled down nine rebounds for the Cardinals (15-3, 5-2). Darin Nagle added 18 points and 10 boards.

•Joel Ryman led five Community Colleges of Spokane players in double figures with 18 points as the Sasquatch defeated Treasure Valley 91-76 in a NWAACC Eastern Division game at Spokane Falls CC.

Jeremy Mangum added 17 points and five eight assists for the Sasquatch (14-3, 3-0), and Jordan Hammond (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Ben Mitchell (12 points, 15 rebounds) each registered double-doubles. Peter Leyk added 10 points.

Justin Lott scored 22 to lead the Chukars (8-10, 0-3), and Eddie Coulson added 21.

Women’s basketball

Caitlin Courchaine scored 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting to lead North Idaho to a 75-70 victory over Salt Lake in an SWAC game in Salt Lake City.

Nichole Scott added 12 points and Ash Gilmore 11 for the Cardinals (13-5, 6-1), who had 16 steals and forced 25 Salt Lake turnovers.

Breanne Law scored 19 to lead the Bruins (12-6, 3-4), and Tonya Jensen added 13.

•Sarah Scates scored 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting as CC Spokane defeated Treasure Valley 50-37 in a NWAACC Eastern Division game at SFCC.

Emily Wittkopf added nine points and 10 rebounds for the Sasquatch (11-7, 1-2), who shot 22 of 36 from the free-throw line and won despite shooting just 27 percent from the field.

The Sasquatch held the Chukars (3-13, 0-3) to just nine first-half points on 3-of-17 shooting and forced 29 turnovers in the game.

Christon Vander Esch led Treasure Valley with 15 points but had 10 turnovers. Brianne Savage added seven points and 11 rebounds.

Wrestling

Kyle Sand earned a pin a minute into his 184-pound match, and the rest of the North Idaho team dominated Pima 40-3 in Tucson, Ariz.

Heinrich Barnes earned a technical fall for the Cardinals in the second period at 141, and Jeff Hedges (125) and Coby Jones (149) each earned major decisions.

Jack Carney won the closest match of the night, holding on for an 8-7 victory in another 149 match.

Whits host Pacific tonight

The Whitworth Pirates men’s and women’s basketball teams, which swept Whitman College on Tuesday, will host Pacific University in the Fieldhouse today starting at 4 p.m.

Today’s doubleheader is the last of two at home with the earlier starting time.

The Pirates women (9-6 overall, 3-4 in Northwest Conference play) will be trying to extend a 14-game winning streak against the Boxers (6-9, 1-5 going into Friday night’s game at Whitman).

The Whit men (10-6, 4-3) have a three-game winning streak against the last-place Boxers (6-8, 1-5 going into Friday night’s game at Whitman).
