Northwestern coach youngest in Division I-A

Pat Fitzgerald was introduced as Northwestern’s coach Friday, little more than a week after Randy Walker died from an apparent heart attack. Fitzgerald, who was an All-American linebacker at the school, becomes the youngest coach in Division I-A at 31.

Fitzgerald, an assistant in various roles under Walker since 2001, eulogized Walker during a memorial service Thursday. As the linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator, he and Walker developed a close bond.

•Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, seriously injured in a motorcycle accident last month, will play in a celebrity golf tournament next week and appear in a music video.

Roethlisberger underwent seven hours of facial reconstruction surgery June 12 after ramming his motorcycle into a car that turned left in front of him on a Pittsburgh street. Roethlisberger broke his jaw and nose when his head smashed into the car’s windshield, and he was thrown over the car onto the pavement.

He was cited for riding without a license and not wearing a helmet.

•Denver Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun will be suspended for the first month of the season after testing positive for the banned supplement ephedra, a person close to the player said.

Basketball

U.S. to play in China

The United States has added a pair of games in Guangzhou, China, as part of its training for the world championships later this summer.

The Americans will play the Chinese on Aug. 7. The game will mark the first time a U.S. team with NBA players will compete against the Chinese in China.

•The Golden State Warriors signed their first-round draft pick Patrick O’Bryant.

Other first-round draft picks signing were J.J. Redick with the Orlando Magic and Kyle Lowry with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Hockey

Top pick chooses college over NHL

Erik Johnson, the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft, will go to the University of Minnesota this fall rather than join the St. Louis Blues.

The Blues retain the rights to the defenseman, and the team was part of his decision to go to college.

•In the Western Hockey League, The Seattle Thunderbirds have acquired goalie Derek Yeomans from the Kelowna Rockets in exchange for defenseman Clayton Barthel.

Horse Racing

Derby winner Barbaro develops complications

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro is being closely monitored after developing complications this week requiring more surgery and treatment of an abscess.

The horse could remain in intensive care for two more months.

Barbaro shattered a leg just after the start of Preakness Stakes in May.
