The Slice: You look nice today, now where is my tip?

The Slice has a friend with a theory.

She believes service workers in a position to receive tips tend to hand out way more compliments about your hair, your clothes, your purse, et cetera than people in virtually any other context.

Agree or disagree?

“Just wondering: Who is the last person in the Inland Northwest who would ever want to get a massage?

“Safety warning No. 7 for the Conair 1875-watt hair dryer: “Never use while sleeping.”

Well, so much for that multi-tasking strategy.

Thanks to Gordon Budke for passing along the instructions sheet.

“Slice answer: April Munyon became a faithful customer of a certain North Side Safeway because she thought Larry, one of the cashiers, was cute. Apparently he felt the same way about her. They’ve been married 14 years now.

So is that why they call it the checkout aisle?

“Second opinion: In an S-R story last week about the fate of a rustic Boy Scouts dining hall at Diamond Lake, a scouting official was quoted as saying “The kids don’t care about historic preservation.”

That prompted a note from Karen Mobley. “I started thinking about all the ways you could complete the sentence ‘Kids don’t care about….’

“Kids don’t care about nuclear physics, dentistry, crop science or musicology. I suspect that because they don’t care isn’t a reason to stop teaching them the value of something like history, art or fine construction craftsmanship.

“This could be a letter to the editor but ‘Kids don’t care about letters to the editor’ either.”

“Two-fer Tuesday: 1. A reader named Ron has a friend who mutes TV commercials and then complains that he didn’t understand them.

2. Another reader thought something was wrong with her sight or that she might have a brain tumor, because when she tipped her head a certain way while looking in the mirror her vision got blurry. Then she figured out that part of the mirror had a film on it from hair spray.

“Street Names Department: “I was terribly disappointed when they changed the name of our short county road from the Old City Dump Road to the name of an early resident,” wrote Richard Wesson of Pullman. “They don’t make names with that kind of old-fashioned directness anymore. So sad.”

“Today’s Slice question: Back in 2002, I spent an enjoyable Saturday night riding around with on-duty Spokane Police Officer Karl Thompson, who has been in the news recently. Recalling that experience got me wondering.

What’s your best story about crossing paths with someone who, years later, wound up in the public spotlight?
