LC grad wins WASL scholarship

“ Kirk Sexton was recently awarded a WASL scholarship from the DigiPen Institute in Redmond, Wash. The award was given based on Sexton’s score of 4 on the math and science portion of the WASL. The scholarship will pay for 50 percent of the annual tuition at the school. Sexton, a 2006 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, is the son of Bob and Carol Sexton of Spokane.

“Barbara Eldredge of Spokane was recently named to the dean’s list at Ohio Wesleyan University. Eldredge, a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, is the daughter of Bruce and Janet Eldredge.

“Katie Quam of Reardan, Wash., was recently selected to attend the annual Music in May event at Pacific University. The event involved nearly 500 band, choral and orchestra students from Oregon, Washington and Idaho high schools for three days of workshops, lessons and rehearsals. Those attending were selected based on a recommendation for their ensemble director.

“Dana Algeo recently graduated from Washington State University with a master’s degree in speech and hearing sciences. Algeo also holds a bachelor’s degree from WSU and is a 1999 graduate of Ferris High School. She is the daughter of Cindy and Richard Algeo of Spokane.

“Michael Maccini was recently selected a Presidential Scholar for the 2006-2007 school year at Dartmouth College. Presidential Scholars serve two terms during their junior year as research assistants to Dartmouth faculty members. Maccini will work with Professor Jeff Taube in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. Maccini, a 2004 graduate of Mt. Spokane High School, is the son of David and Merry Maccini of Colbert.

“Army Pfc. Nahakuelua Arquero recently graduated from the food service specialist advanced individual training course at Fort Lee, Va. Arquero, the son of Cherry Arquero of Spokane, is a 1998 graduate of Cheney High School.

“ Army Pvt. John Tyler recently graduated from light wheeled vehicle mechanic advanced individual training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Tyler, a 2005 graduate of Mt. Spokane High School, is the son of Edwin Tyler of Athol, Idaho, and Melissa Halverson of Spokane.

“ Air Force Airman Aaron Sigl recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. Sigl, the son of James Sigl of Spokane and Karen Davenport of Stockton, Calif., is a 2001 graduate of A.A. Stagg High School in Stockton.

“Teresa Abrahamson-Richards, a 2006 graduate of Gonzaga Prep, has received several scholarships. She has received a Presidential Scholarship from Seattle University worth $15,000 annually for four years. She was recently awarded an annual $1,500 Ignatian Scholarship and an annual $7,000 Costco Scholarship.

Abrahamson-Richards also recently received a Washington State Honors Award for academic achievement and a President’s Education Award for Educational Excellence.

“Kathleen Burgard recently graduated from Washington State University with bachelor’s degrees in French language and culture and German language and culture. Burgard, a 2001 graduate of University High School, is the daughter of Karen and Dan Burgard of Spokane Valley. Burgard also was named the 2006 Outstanding Senior for the Department of Foreign Language and Cultures.

“ The following area residents have been named to the spring semester president’s list at Gonzaga University. Students must hold a grade-point average of 3.7 or above to be named to the list. Students are listed by their hometown.

“ The Foothills Rural Association and the Blue Ribbon Circle recently awarded scholarships to several Foothills area residents. All were awarded $500 Jess Kronquist Memorial Scholarships:

Candy Howard is attending Spokane Community College.

Charlyn Johnson, the daughter of Lynn and Sherry Johnson, hold a degree from the University of Washington. She is pursuing a master’s degree in teaching.

Korina Kerbs, the daughter of Kelvin and Constance Kerbs, is a 2006 graduate of East Valley High School. She was awarded two $500 scholarships.

Haley Mayewski, the daughter of Leslie and Roger Mayewski, is a 2006 graduate of East Valley High School.

Angela Pizelo, a 2006 graduate of East Valley High School and Spokane Community College-Running Start, is the daughter of Paul and Liz Pizelo.

“The Spokane South Rotary Scholarship Committee recently awarded four $2,000 scholarships based on outstanding academics, leadership and community service.

The recipients of this year’s Spokane South Rotary Rick Chisholm Memorial Scholarships are Jordan Clark and Lisa Pearson, both 2006 graduates of Lewis and Clark High School.

The recipients of this year’s Spokane South Rotary Ron Biondi Memorial Scholarship are Diana Budenholzer and Alysha Spear, both 2006 graduates of Ferris High School.

“Tara Mayeau of Spokane recently graduated from New Mexico Tech with a bachelor’s degree in earth science-geophysics. Mayeau, a graduate of Shadle Park High School, also was awarded the university’s Brown Award. The award is given annually to a graduating senior judged by the faculty to be the best in scholarship, conduct and leadership.

“The Inland Northwest Business Alliance Outreach recently announced the recipients of several scholarships:

Jeremy Bolton of Spokane received $500. He will attend Spokane Falls Community College.

Jason Gallaher of Spokane was awarded $500. He will attend the University of Puget Sound.

Heather Hoberg of Spokane was awarded $1,000. She is attending Eastern Washington University.
