Lyncs add 2A title to trio won in 1A

YAKIMA – Kyle Coston scored a game-high 25 points to lead top-ranked Lynden Christian past King’s 53-36 on Saturday to claim the State 2A boys basketball championship at the SunDome.

The Lyncs, who finished at 25-2, won their fourth boys title, but the first in the 2A ranks. LC beat King’s 46-33 in the Northwest District championship game on March 3.

Coston scored eight of his team’s first 10 points in the second half and finished with 18 points after intermission. The Knights climbed back to within seven points late in the third quarter, but didn’t get any closer.

“We knew they had to foul down the stretch and shoot 3s and make us miss,” said Coston, who was 10 of 16 at the free-throw line. “It was big to finish like that. It really started to sink in when I was shooting free throws. It’s still sinking in. It’s big. It’s the 2A championship.”

Coston was named the MVP of the boys tournament, while Riverside’s Jason Paul was named to the second team.

Girls

Sara Mosiman scored a game-high 17 points to lead King’s (26-2) to its second straight 2A state title as the Knights rolled past Lynden Christian (24-3) 49-27 at the SunDome.

Mosiman was the girls MVP for the second consecutive year, with Lakeside’s Kia Gibson on the first team.
