Hurricanes reach new heights with victory

Doug Weight scored two goals and the NHL-leading Carolina Hurricanes set franchise records for victories, home wins and points in a season with a 5-3 victory over the slumping New York Rangers on Tuesday night in Raleigh, N.C.

Matt Cullen, Mike Commodore and Cory Stillman also scored for the Hurricanes, who earned their 44th victory, 27th home win and 94th point in the standings – surpassing three records set in Hartford during the 1986-87 season.

Martin Gerber finished with 41 saves to help Carolina avoid its first four-game losing streak of the season.

Michael Nylander scored two goals for New York, which has lost six straight after wining seven in a row.

Sabres 6, Capitals 4: Ales Kotalik scored the winning goal with 1:43 to play and Buffalo ran its win streak to seven with a victory in Washington.

Islanders 6, Devils 1: Rick DiPietro made 16 saves and New York extended its win streak to four games with a victory over New Jersey in East Rutherford, N.J.

Senators 4, Lightning 3: Daniel Alfredsson scored with 5.2 seconds left in the third period to lift Ottawa over visiting Tampa Bay.

Maple Leafs 5, Bruins 4 (SO): Darcy Tucker scored the only goal in a shootout and Toronto rallied for a victory over visiting Boston.

Oilers 2, Wild 1: Goalie Dwayne Roloson won for the first time with his new team, stopping 30 shots to lead Edmonton past Minnesota at St. Paul, Minn.

Predators 5, Canucks 0: Tomas Vokoun made 31 saves for his third shutout of the season and Dan Hamhuis and Scott Hartnell each had a goal and an assist as Nashville blanked Vancouver at Nashville, Tenn.

Coyotes 6, Kings 2: Geoff Sanderson had a goal and two assists, Mike Ricci and Dave Scatchard scored on power plays and Phoenix routed Los Angeles to snap a 13-game road winless streak against the Kings.

Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Bryan Berard will miss the rest of the season because of a back injury that has sidelined him since Jan. 27. … The Washington Capitals signed 2003 draft pick Stephen Werner, a right wing, to a two-year contract.
