Hanna Dagg photo ‘Suburban Flight’ cited at juried show

Eastern Washington University student Hanna Dagg recently had one of her photographs selected for the Larson Gallery’s 34th annual National Juried Photography Exhibition in Yakima last month. Her photo, titled “Suburban Flight” was awarded the Georgia Moore McKay Award, which commemorates the influence of women photographers and photojournalists. Dagg, a 2005 graduate of Shadle Park High School, is the daughter of Bridget and Stu Dagg of Spokane.

Raena Parsons was recently awarded a $6,000 Regents Scholarship at the Chaminade University of Honolulu for the 2006-2007 academic year. The award is based on academic achievement. Parsons, a senior at Medical Lake High School, is the daughter of Laura Parson of Medical Lake.

• Several local residents have been awarded scholarships at Western Washington University. Five of them received President’s Scholarships, which are based on academic achievement.

Alexis Allen received a $500 President’s Scholarship. Allen, a graduate of Ferris High School, is the daughter of Raymond and Shelley Allen of Spokane.

Naomi Burland received a $2,000 two-year President’s Scholarship. Burland, a Shadle Park High School graduate, is the daughter of Elmer Burland and Rebecca Burland, both of Spokane.

Lisa Carpine received a $750 William Wade Haggard Memorial Scholarship. Carpine is the daughter of Mike and Joyce Carpine.

Samantha Cooper received a $500 President’s Scholarship. Cooper, the daughter of Robert and Mary Cooper of Cheney, is a graduate of Cheney High School.

Christine Everson received a $750 Mathematics Memorial Scholarship. Everson is the daughter of Timothy and Mary Everson of Spokane.

Sarah Ferris received a $620 Hazel Lowrey Anderson Memorial Scholarship. Ferris is the daughter of Abraham and Barbara Ferris of Spokane.

Erik Freese received a $150 Richard Green Putnam Award. Freese is the son of Mark and Kathryn Freese of Spokane.

Matthew Horrocks received a $1,500 WWU Dining Services/National Residence Hall Honorary Excellence in Leadership Scholarship and a $1,000 College of Business and Economics Distinguished Scholar Scholarship. Horrocks is the son of Bob and Carol Horrocks of Spokane.

Robyn Lapoint received a $1,900 Fred and Ellen Agee Memorial Scholarship. Lapoint is the daughter of Elwyn and Deborah Lapoint of Spokane.

Mons Lee received a $1,300 Dr. J.J. Viet Memorial Scholarship. Lee is the son of Alan and Donna Lee of Spokane.

Kris Ogren received a $500 President’s Scholarship. Ogren, a graduate of Northwest Christian School, is the son of Grant Ogren of Spokane and Melanie Whitesides of Otis Orchards.

Cody Pond received a $500 Elias Bond Graduate Fellowship. Pond is the son of Finn and Jean Pond of Spokane.

Andrew Richardson received a $500 Richard Green Putnam Teaching Award. He is the son of Kent and Diane Richardson of Spokane.

Christopher Vennum received a $1,000 President’s Scholarship. Vennum, a graduate of West Valley High School, is the son of Michael and Kathryn Vennum of Spokane.

•Two local students were recently awarded scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year at Washington State University.

Mary Johnson, a Gonzaga Prep senior, was awarded a $2,500 University Achievement Award based on academic achievement. Johnson is the daughter of Nancy and Mitch Johnson of Liberty Lake.

Sara Hilliard received a $1,000 Honors College Beardsley Family Foundation Honors Veterinary Medicine Scholarship. Hilliard, a 2003 graduate of The Oaks Academy, is the daughter and Kathleen and Daniel Hilliard of Spokane.

• Two departments at Washington State University recently announced awards given to students, faculty and staff.

The College of Engineering and Architecture gave the Anjan Bose Outstanding Researcher Award to Michael Wolcott, professor of wood materials and engineering. Wolcott has been on the WSU faculty since 1996 and is known for his wood-based composite research.

Sean Collison of Veradale received the Outstanding Junior Award. Collison, a computer engineering major, works for Student Computing Services and has helped set up billing systems at the college.

Jessica Jahn of Davenport, Wash., received the Outstanding Senior Award. Jahn, a biological systems engineering major, has done research in hydrology and is involved in numerous engineering groups.

Staff Excellence Awards were given to Mary Brown, academic coordinator for the School of Architecture and Construction Management, and Judy Croskey, principal assistant for the School of Architecture and Construction Management. Giac Pham, an information technology systems specialist for the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, was named Employee of the Year.

The WSU College of Liberal Arts awarded the 2006 Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award to Eugene Rosa, a sociology professor. The award is given to faculty members who have served the college with distinction in teaching, research and public service.

Ann Gooch, program support supervisor and acting finance/budget manager in the Department of Psychology, was the winner of the Outstanding Staff Award. Fine Arts professor Ann Christenson was awarded the William F. Mullan Excellence in Teaching Award. Recipients are nominated by fellow teachers based on involvement with students outside the classroom.

•Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Jared McCartney recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. McCartney is the son of Debra Hewitt of Republic, Wash.

Idaho

•North Idaho College student Jessica Beehner of Wallace was named Coeur d’Alene Rotary Club Student of the Month for April. She is a 2004 graduate of Wallace High School and holds a 3.9 grade-point average. She plans to transfer to a college in Montana to major in communications after graduating from NIC this spring.
