Remembering Sept. 11
Here are some of the events area organizations are hosting to commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
“The Rev. Daniel Matthews will speak about his experiences watching the terrorist attacks on New York City, and in the months after. Matthews is rector emeritus of Trinity Church, which is across the street from the World Trade Center; 9 a.m. today at Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave.; Matthews will also preach during 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. worship services.
“The Goldmark for Congress campaign is hosting an event honoring police, firefighters, veterans and others who have served their country. Speakers include Democratic candidate Peter Goldmark and Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer, with a Native American drum tribute by Gary Fox; 3 p.m. Monday at Spokane Veterans Arena.
“Tribute to Lt. Forrest Ewens, a 2004 graduate of Whitworth College and member of Gonzaga University ROTC who was killed in Afghanistan in June. Speakers include the Rev. Rick Ganz; noon Monday in the chapel, third floor, GU administration building.
“Spokane County Interstate Fair is dedicating Monday to honoring members of the armed forces, firefighters and law enforcement officers. A Patriot’s Day parade starts at 5:30 p.m., leading through the fairgrounds to the grandstand, where a memorial service starts at 6. That’s followed at 6:45 by a Lee Greenwood concert, for those with tickets.
“In remembrance of the attacks, the Spokane Police Honor Guard will present the colors and the Spokane police chaplain will conduct an invocation during the swearing in of new police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick; 10 a.m. Monday at the Spokane Police Training Center, 2302 N. Waterworks Ave.
“”Never Forget Sept. 11, 2001” memorial event at 10 a.m. Monday at Sandpoint City Park, near the Statue of Liberty. State Sen. Shawn Keough, R-Sandpoint, as well as fire, law enforcement and military personnel; VFW members; and the Albeni Falls Pipes & Drums will take part.
“Post Falls American Legion Post 143 will mark the anniversary with a ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at Q’emiln Park at the Lions Pavilion. Mayor Clay Larkin, members of the clergy, fire and police personnel, and bagpipers will take part.
