Whitworth men win conference opener

Whitworth’s men opened their Northwest Conference soccer title defense with a 3-0 win Saturday over visiting George Fox behind two goals from Sean Lambrecht.

Lambrecht scored in the 19th and 57th minutes. Whitworth improved to 2-2-1 overall.

•Jay Vela scored four goals to lead Community Colleges of Spokane to an 8-0 victory over Wenatchee Valley in NWWACC play in Wenatchee.

Keith Kirsch added a goal and an assist for the Sasquatch, who improved to 5-2-1 overall and 4-1 in NWAACC play.

Women’s soccer

Greta Thibodeau scored two goals within the first 15 minutes to lead Whitworth (3-0-1, 1-0) to a 2-0 win over George Fox in Northwest Conference play at Whitworth.

•Lauren Nay scored twice as Community Colleges of Spokane beat Wenatchee Valley 4-0 in a NWAACC game in Wenatchee.

Volleyball

Jessica Brodie had 22 kills and Dominique Fradella added 56 assists as Portland State (7-3, 2-0) beat Eastern Washington (7-4, 0-2) 30-26, 30-23, 30-32, 30-24 in a Big Sky Conference match in Portland. Sarah Sirianni led Portland State with 20 digs.

•Angie Florence had 21 kills and Nikki Bardwell added 15 as Whitworth defeated Willamette 24-30, 30-24, 24-30, 30-21, 15-4 in Northwest Conference play in Salem, Ore.

The Pirates lost a non-conference match earlier in the day to La Verne 30-22, 30-21, 30-24. Whitworth is now 1-1 in the NWC.

•North Idaho beat Community Colleges of Spokane and Whatcom Community College before falling to Southern Idaho to wrap up the North Idaho Volleyball tournament in Coeur d’Alene.

In the first match, Amanda Misa had eight kills and Lauren Stern added 27 assists as the Cardinals beat the Sasquatch 30-21, 30-16.

Misa came up big again in NIC’s 30-15, 30-10 win over Whatcom, teaming with Cintia Alessi and Daidre Mendenhall for 22 kills.

In the final match, North Idaho fell to Southern Idaho 25-30, 30-21, 15-6.

•Jeanette Jenkins had 18 kills and Mandy Klein added 46 assists as Boise State (6-5) beat Gonzaga (4-9) 30-26, 30-26, 30-28 at the Bronco Fall Invitational in Boise.

Klein added five kills, three aces and eight digs for Boise State.

Gonzaga will return to action Tuesday when it plays at Montana.
