In brief: Mayors to have ‘showdown’

The Spokesman-Review

Calling all cowboys and cowgirls: Post Falls’ first annual “Mayoral Showdown” next month is offering free vittles and fun for the community.

Post Falls Mayor Clay “White Shirt” Larkin will take on Sandpoint Mayor Ray “Kaniksu Kid” Miller in the mayoral showdown, sponsored by Mary Willeford Allstate Agency as a customer-appreciation event.

The mayors are “just really good sports,” Willeford said. “They’re calling each other out. It’s just too funny.”

The May 10 event, held at 306 Spokane St., will feature the Panhandle Gunslingers, prizes, food, a safety demonstration, skits and a cowboy costume contest. The event will run from 5 to 7 p.m., with the shooting beginning at 5:45.

“Everybody’s welcome,” Willeford said. “It’s going to be a hoot.”

Businesses on display

The public is invited to the 2007 Commerce and Community Fair from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at the Greyhound Park and Event Center.

More than 80 businesses will be showcased at the free event, where snacks and appetizers will be provided.

Participants may play business bingo and win prizes, organizers said. The public also is invited to bring two cans of food to benefit the Post Falls Food Bank.

The event is sponsored by the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce, Life Care Center of Coeur d’Alene, STCU, Greyhound Park and Event Center, and Time Warner Cable.

Youth Award nominations

Nominations to recognize community-oriented students are needed for the Post Falls Mayor’s Youth Awards, which honor kids ages 5 to 18.

So far, nominations have been trickling in before the Friday deadline, said Dede Tondee, the organizer of the sixth annual event.

“I know there are a lot of kids out there doing great things in the community,” Tondee said. “No good deed is too small.”

Parents, relatives, friends, educators and peers can nominate kids for acts of kindness and service, such as helping a neighbor walk the dog or collecting items for a coat drive at school, Tondee said.

Kids can’t nominate themselves, however. The good deed must have been performed between May 2006 and April 2007, Tondee said.

The May 24 ceremony will honor the nominees and award individual and group winners in four age categories. The event – which has an “Everyday Heroes” theme this year – will be held at Q’emiln Park in Post Falls.

Nomination forms are available at Post Falls schools and on the city of Post Falls Web site, www.postfallsidaho.org. They can be turned in or mailed to City Hall at 408 N. Spokane St.

TESH accepting donations

Time to clear out and pass on those gently-used treasures that have been gathering dust in the garage. TESH Inc. is accepting donations for its thrift stores at three locations during the second annual Spring Clean and Fling event on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Donations are welcome at the main TESH office, 3803 Industrial Ave. S. in Coeur d’Alene; the Post Falls Senior Center Thrift Store, 1211 E. Third Ave.; and the Kellogg Thrift Store, 140 Railroad Ave. Donations of furniture and household appliances are needed, as well as gently-used clothing, household goods, tools, sporting equipment, and gardening implements. All donations are tax-deductible and qualify for an additional Idaho tax credit. Receipts will be available.

When donors drop off their goods at the Post Falls and Kellogg locations, they are invited to shop the parking lot sale and enjoy refreshments. The Post Falls store is also hosting a flea market. In case of rain, the Post Falls parking lot sale will be held at TESH in Coeur d’Alene.

Donations are also accepted at TESH during business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. TESH stores create employment opportunities and job training for adults with disabilities and raise funds for TESH programs and Post Falls Senior Center meal programs.

Dusty Cleavage Ride Sunday

Panhandle Trail Riders Association hosts its third annual Dusty Cleavage Ride Sunday at Spokane’s Seven-Mile ORV Park.

The riders’ meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the poker-ride-style event will take place from 10 to noon. Riders will do laps around the park, getting a card for each lap completed. Trophies will be awarded, and a potluck lunch will follow, so please bring a dessert or salad. (Rumor is – the group really likes dessert!)

Last year, 16 ladies took part in the ride and reported they all returned home with “dusty cleavage.” With trophies awarded for the “worst crash” and the “dustiest cleavage,” this free event promises to be fun for all you female dirt bike riders. T-shirts will be available for sale for $15.

The event is open to the public. Contact Lori at pantratrails@hotmail.com or call (509) 951-3821; or Tia at tiaf@icehouse.net or call (208) 666-1236.
