GSL GIRLS: CV, LC to match 6-0 marks

The Spokesman-Review

Central Valley continued its Greater Spokane League girls basketball comeback with a 60-46 win over visiting Mt. Spokane on Friday night.

The Bears (6-0), who had placed no higher than fifth the past three seasons, are off to a fast start for first-year coach Freddie Rehkow and share the GSL lead with Lewis and Clark three weeks into the season.

The two face off for the undisputed GSL lead when they meet for the first time at LC on Tuesday.

Good shooting led to a quick start and a 29-19 halftime lead over the Wildcats (3-3). Justine Bowman continues to set the tone. She scored 17 points – her season average – finishing in double figures for the fifth time.

Ashley Hinseth scored a season-high 16.

Mt. Spokane got the game into single digits in the third quarter before CV got away again. The Bears finished it off with a 15-12 advantage in the final period.

Sophomore Katie Karisch of Mt. Spokane led all scorers with 18 points and Callie Bergstrom added 11 and had eight rebounds. But the Wildcats’ second-leading scorer, guard Korina Baker, was blanked in the game.

Central Valley won 10 league championships and finished second three times between 1990 and 2004 with three state championships.

This team, made up primarily of sophomores and freshman a year ago, has already surpassed last year’s win total.

Mead 41, University 35: The Panthers (5-1) pounded on the host Titans (3-3) early in this game between state veteran teams.

Mead led 13-2 after a quarter and held off U-Hi, which cut the deficit to two points with five minutes left. Three-pointers by Jazmine Redmon and Emma Barrington halted the comeback. Redmon scored 14 points and hauled down eight rebounds and Tifa Puletasi added a dozen points for the victors.

Riki Schiermeister had 10 points and six rebounds for the Titans. The victory keeps Mead within a game of first place in the GSL.

Gonzaga Prep 56, East Valley 52: The host Bullpups (2-3) rallied in the fourth quarter to deny the Knights (0-5) their first win.

Gonzaga made a run with three minutes remaining to outscore EV by seven points in the final period. The Knights had led after a quarter and regained the lead after the third period. But Jenna Sayman turned in a huge performance in the game and final quarter to carry the day. Sayman, with eight field goals and 12-of-16 free-throw shooting, finished with half the Bullpups’ points. She scored 11 of her game-high 28 in the final quarter.

Kelsi Jacobson continued as the Knights’ leading scorer with 16. In her second game of the year, Morgan Manchester added nine.

Shadle Park 71, Rogers 26: The visiting Highlanders (4-1) outscored the Pirates (0-5) 20-0 in the third quarter to put on the capper.

Amanda Carlton had a season-high 21 points for Shadle, including three 3-pointers. She also had six rebounds and two assists. Season scoring leader Lexie Pettersen added 13. Samantha Roybal hit four 3-pointers for Rogers.

Lewis and Clark 67, North Central 19: Six Tigers (6-0) scored nine points or more in an easy win on the Indians’ (1-4) floor in a tuneup for Tuesday’s showdown with CV.

Jeneva Anderson scored 12 points and Mary Blevins added 10 as LC’s double-figure performers. Ashley Woodruff, one of four with nine points, got them all on 3-pointers.
