AREA ROUNDUP : Barnes’ close win paces Cardinals

Hinrich Barnes defeated Bo Gregson 8-5 (141 pounds) in a rematch of the Clackamas Open finals last weekend as North Idaho defeated visiting Simon Fraser 32-12 in a nonconference match. Evan Mattingley wrestled well in a 20-5 technical fall over Ali Al-rekabi at 197 pounds. Brandon Palaniuk and Kyle Sand earned the Cardinals’ only pins at 133 and 184 pounds, respectively.

Track and field

Idaho senior Russ Winger was named Western Athletic Conference men’s indoor track and field Athlete of the Week.

Winger won the shot put at the Washington State University Open last Saturday with a meet record and NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 63 feet, 5 ½ inches. Last Friday he finished second in the weight throw with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 65 feet, 1 ½ inches at the same meet.

Women’s basketball

Stephanie Hawk tallied 20 points and 13 rebounds as visiting Gonzaga beat San Francisco 58-53.
