Boy bitten by three dogs, hospitalized

Elida S. Perez Staff writer

An 8-year-old boy remained hospitalized in serious condition Saturday after being attacked by three dogs.

Officials said the boy was going to a neighbor’s house in the 4100 block of Kenney Road in Otis Orchards to return some money for his mother when the dogs started barking at him about 9 p.m. Friday.

The owner of the three 80-100 pound dogs, two American Bulldogs and one Saint Bernard mix, said the boy looked frightened as he approached the front porch, where the dogs were. According to a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office press release, the owner told deputies she saw the boy turn around and walk back toward the road.

“The neighbor was trying to quiet her dogs from barking, and this is when (they) ran from the porch and started to repeatedly bite and drag the boy,” Detective David Thornburg said in the release.

While trying to separate the boy from the dogs, the owner said she pulled him into her truck, but the animals still held onto his body with their teeth.

She eventually freed the boy and drove him to his mother’s house to get medical attention.

The boy is in serious but stable condition at a local hospital, Thornburg said. The child suffered numerous dog bites and injuries to the right side of his face, shoulder and both arms and legs.

The dog’s owner voluntarily handed over her animals to officials from Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service. She also signed a waiver to have the dogs euthanized after a 10-day quarantine, Thornburg said.
