Nation in brief: Two killed when jet crashes into house

The Spokesman-Review

A small jet crashed into a house as it was apparently trying to land at a nearby airport on Saturday, killing the male pilot and a woman on the ground, authorities said.

Faulkner County Coroner Patrick Moore said the woman killed was an occupant of the house, which is about 500 feet from the runway at Conway Municipal Airport.

Moore said a passenger in the plane and another person in the house survived.

The Conway Police Department identified the two people killed as Hugh Raines, 71, of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Janet Brady, 71, of Conway.

Roland Herwig of the Federal Aviation Administration said early information indicated the plane “landed long” on a wet runway and was trying to take off again when it hit the house.

Searchers find missing toddler

A toddler who had been missing for more than 24 hours was found sitting on a stump with his dog by his side, police said Saturday.

A volunteer searcher on horseback found Connor Cummings, 23 months old, at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, said Detective Jason Tingen. The toddler had wandered from his home outside Oxford at about 6:30 p.m. Friday.

“He was scratched up, dirty and had some ticks on him,” Tingen said in a telephone interview. “He was in pretty good spirits.”

The boy and his Labrador retriever, Sandy, spent the night outside in mild temperatures, authorities said.

The boy had gone outside with his mother to feed the family dogs when he left, police said. “He was wearing a jumper and sandals.”

Court upholds anti-stripping law

Erotic dancers in adult bars in most parts of this Spring Break city are going to have to wear as much clothing as most people on the beach.

A federal appeals court upheld municipal zoning and nudity ordinances on Thursday after the city and Lollipops Gentlemen’s Club made their cases before the court on March 23.

“The bottom line is the 11th Circuit Court (of Appeals) upheld the city’s authority to enforce its zoning regulations and public nudity ordinance with regard to the adult entertainment establishments,” City Attorney Bob Brown said.

In other words, dancers at adult clubs that serve liquor are required to wear conservative bikinis. G-strings and pasties won’t be enough to meet that requirement, the court said.
