WNBA: Taylor tosses in 26 points to lead Mercury over Comets

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

HOUSTON – Penny Taylor scored 26 points to lead the Phoenix Mercury to a 92-75 win over the Houston Comets in WNBA action on Saturday night.

Kelly Mazzante added 15 points as the Mercury snapped Houston’s four-game home winning streak and did so without star guard Diana Taurasi, who completed her two-game league suspension on Saturday.

The Mercury also beat Houston 90-85 last Sunday in Phoenix.

The Comets got a season-high 17 points from Roneeka Hodges, but lost for just the second time in six games after starting the season with the second-worst start in WNBA history.

Houston lost its first 10 games of the season and fell to 4-5 at home.

Tina Thompson added 16 points for the Comets, who will not play again until Friday when they host the Seattle Storm to complete a five-game homestand.

Cappie Pondexter, who missed the past three games with a strained groin, added 13 points for the Mercury, who had lost three of four before back-to-back wins over the Comets.

The Mercury outscored Houston 22-16 in the second to take control and led by 20 in the fourth quarter.
