Map makes finding your way around Rathdrum easier

Mary Jane Honegger The Spokesman-Review

For the first time in years, Rathdrum has a new city map. Local resident Wayne Harper brought up the idea after his sister, who creates maps, visited the area. Efforts to find sponsors for the maps were successful and 2000 maps were recently distributed among the sponsors, including the city and the Chamber of Commerce.

According to city manager Brett Boyer, “From the city’s perspective it’s a great thing. We have people coming in looking to find their way around Rathdrum, and we had nothing we could give them. This gives us something we can give them – and its something they can take with them.” City staff reviewed the streets and made sure the information was correct before the maps were printed. “The map has a street index that is helpful and up to date,” said Boyer.

McDonald’s Big Wheel Races

Rathdrum’s McDonald’s restaurant and others are once again sponsoring a Big Wheel Race as part of the fun at Rathdrum Days, July 14. The ever-active Rathdrum Parks and Recreation Department is giving kids in Rathdrum the chance to race their big wheels. Five divisions of racers, from ages 2 to 7, will get a chance to compete and everyone who enters wins a prize. The race will take place on at 1 pm at Lakeland High School. Registration packets can be picked up at Rathdrum Parks and Recreation and surrounding McDonald’s through July 14. More information: 687-2399.

Share you summer photos

Summertime is picture taking time and photographs are back in style. While it seemed digital cameras made looking at a stack of vacation photos obsolete for the past few years, recent innovative online photo printing and Internet photo-sharing services have changed all that. No more, “Oh, we took great pictures of our vacation, but they’re home on our computer – I’ll show them to you someday.”

Internet companies such as Snapfish and Shutterfly and the photo services offered by big retailers including Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens, and Costco are easy to use and offer lots of creative ideas for plastering one’s favorite pics on everything from shirts, mugs, posters and calendars to hats, ties, mouse pads, stretched canvas, and even an apron for your favorite aunt.

With the click of the mouse from the comfort of home, or with a visit to any of these retailers, one can purchase copies; order enlargements; save photos to CDs; and even share photos with friends and family anywhere. Photos can be ordered online to be picked up at a retailer one hour later, or they can be delivered by mail.

Snapfish and Shutterfly, both Web-based image-sharing and print services, offer high quality prints, photo gifts, and free online storage of pictures – a great service if something happens to your computer or stored photos. To give you an idea of how popular these services are, as of 2006, Snapfish claims to have over 19 million members, and to house over 350 million unique digital pictures.

The cost for these photo services is reasonable, with high quality 4-by-6 photos costing in the 12 cents to 19 cents range. Other sizes, and special orders, such as photo cards, calendars and posters are affordable, and easy to order.

So, don’t leave all those wonderful Fourth of July memories stuck on your computer. Get some photos made and share those summertime memories.
